Baseball

David Justice announced his retirement on The Dan Patrick Show on ESPN radio Thursday afternoon. Justice, who was a key player during the Atlanta Braves' dominance in the 1990s, ended his career after playing with four different teams. He won World Series titles with the Braves in 1995 and the New York Yankees in 2000.

Colleges

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun had his cancerous prostate removed, and a full recovery is expected. The 60-year-old coach will be released from the hospital this weekend and will be able to resume coaching in three-to-four weeks, Dr. Peter Albertsen said.

Golf

Tiger Woods, who spent the last two months recovering from knee surgery, will end the longest layoff of his career next week when he returns to the PGA Tour in San Diego. In a conference call last week, Woods reported no pain in his left knee. He played 18 holes for the first time Tuesday with his father and shot 66.

Kevin Sutherland shot a 6-under 66 Thursday for a one-stroke lead over Mike Weir and Robert Gamez in thePebble BeachNational Pro-Am.

Tennis

Mark Philippoussis gave Australia a 1-0 lead in its Davis Cup world group match with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over Britain's Alan Mackin. Britain was without Tim Henman and Greg Rusesdki because of injury. So singles starts went to Mackin and Alex Bogdanovic, who plays world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the second match on clay at the Sydney International Tennis Center.

Southeast softball picked fourth in OVC poll

Southeast Missouri State University's softball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference, according to preseason voting by the league's head coaches.

Defending regular-season and tournament champion Eastern Kentucky received seven of eight first-place votes and is the favorite. Tennessee Tech nabbed the remaining first-place vote.

Tennessee-Martin was picked third, followed by Southeast, Eastern Illinois, Austin Peay, Morehead State and Tennessee State.

Southeast was 14-27 overall last year, including 9-12 in the OVC to finish tied for fourth.

The Otahkians open the season March 1 in the Austin Peay Tournament.

So why wouldn't Lopez have a golden touch when it comes to betting on the Super Bowl?

According to the Las Vegas Sun, J-Lo placed a six-figure wager on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the MGM Grand on Sunday -- and won.

Citing numerous sources, the newspaper reported that Lopez put $250,000 down on Tampa Bay to win Super Bowl XXXVII and took the money line at plus-160. That means she won $400,000 -- and also got her original investment back.
