Baseball

The Cardinals and Padres traded right-handed pitchers Sunday as the winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn., sprung to life, with Brett Tomko going to St. Louis for Luther Hackman and a player to be named.

Tomko went 10-10 with a 4.49 ERA last season with the Padres, surpassing the 200-inning plateau for the second time in his career. He received three or fewer runs of support in half of his team-leading 32 starts.

Hackman went 5-4 with a 4.11 ERA, making six starts and a career-high 43 appearances. This winter, he has been pitching in Puerto Rico, going 2-3 with a 1.63 ERA in seven games, six starts.

A four-team deal sent Erubiel Durazo from Arizona to Oakland, pitcher Elmer Dessens from Cincinnati to the Diamondbacks, shortstop Felipe Lopez from Toronto to the Reds and a player to be named -- possibly minor league pitcher Jason Arnold -- to the Blue Jays.

Boston acquired Jeremy Giambi from Philadelphia for pitcher Jason Hancock and Tampa Bay got Rey Ordonez from the Mets for two players to be named.

Also Sunday, the Mets' Edgardo Alfonzo and the San Francisco Giants agreed on a $26 million, four-year contract.

Colleges

UCLA scored with two minutes left Sunday and beat Stanford 1-0 to win the men's NCAA soccer championship.

Golf

Japan's Shigeki Maruyama and Toshimitsu Izawa shot a 6-under par 66 and won the World Cup Sunday when the American team of Phil Mickelson and David Toms made double bogey on the final hole.

Japan won the two-man event with a score of 36-under par.
