Baseball

The tentative trade to send Larry Walker from the Rockies to the Diamondbacks for Matt Williams and three others fell through Friday. The teams ceased talks after Williams vetoed the trade to remain with his family and the Diamondbacks failed to reach a financial agreement with Walker.

Tom Glavine, the most coveted free-agent pitcher on the market, met with the Phillies on Friday, a day after he visited the New York Mets. Both teams are trying to persuade the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner to leave Atlanta, his team for 16 years.

Basketball

Trail Blazers teammates Damon Stoudamire and Rasheed Wallace were cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession after their vehicle was stopped on the way home from a game in Seattle.

Colleges

University of Memphis guard Jeremy Hunt had surgery on his left foot and will be sidelined for four to six weeks, the school said.

Football

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith was jailed and charged with misdemeanor assault after attacking a teammate earlier this week.

Tommy Maddox will likely return to the sidelines, but Steelers fans shouldn't expect much else. Steelers coach Bill Cowher said the quarterback will be in uniform Sunday against the Bengals, but under no circumstances will Maddox play.

Golf

After settling for a par 71 in the opening round, Tiger Woods rallied with a 3-under 68 in the second round of the $1.65 million Dunlop Phoenix Open to finish eight strokes behind leader Kaname Yokoo of Japan. Yokoo had six birdies in a bogey-free 65 that left him at 11 under -- four strokes ahead of Spain's Sergio Garcia (68), England's Justin Rose (69) and Myanmar's Zaw Moe (67).

Despite another three-putt bogey, Anika Sorenstam continued her otherwise flawless play with a 2-under 70 that gave her a one-stroke lead in the ADT Championship, putting her in good position to capture her 11th title of the year.

Swimming

Natalie Coughlin set a world record short-course in the 100-meter butterfly on Friday, finishing in 56.34 seconds at the FINA World Cup. The 20-year-old junior at Cal broke the mark of 56.55, set on Jan. 26 by Martina Moracova of Sweden.

People

The horse wouldn't lie ... right?

Bad news, Washington State football fans: We have it from the horse's mouth that Ohio State will beat Michigan today.

Monturo, a 3-year-old colt owned by Ohio resident Jenny Belcher, won the annual $20,000 Buckeye-Wolverine Pace, pitting the top four pacers from Ohio and Michigan, at Raceway Park on Sunday in Toledo, Ohio.

As raceway General Manager Mike White told The Plain Dealer: "Since the race was first launched five years ago, the winner of the race has perfectly predicted the winner of the football game which follows."

Despite the race's 4-for-4 record in forecasting the football winner, Monturo trainer Bob Belcher isn't betting the barn on the Buckeyes to make it 5 for 5. "I don't bet," he said, "but I'll probably watch the game."
