A good column

THANKS TO Marty Mishow for his comments on finally getting the situation straight with Southeast Missouri State women's basketball coach B.J. Smith. He wrote in the Dec. 10 column that Smith himself is largely to blame for the situation he found himself in. It's too bad coach Smith couldn't concentrate on what he was hired to do because he did a great job at winning basketball games, but there's more to being a head coach in Division I than winning games. Thanks, Marty, for hopefully setting some people straight with your article in Sunday's paper.

Tips for coach Edgar

THE SOUTHEAST men's basketball team has the potential to be a very good team. If they boxed out a lot more, penetrated more and stopped shooting so many 3-pointers, they would be a much more dangerous team in the OVC.

The good ole days

WHATEVER HAPPENED to the days when we had real demolition derby races? Can't we bring back the circle track and figure eight?

Congrats to All-Americans

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI State had two football student-athletes named to The Associated Press I-AA All-America football team last week. Congratulations to first-teamer Edgar Jones and second-team selection David Simonoff. This is the third consecutive year as an All-American for Simonoff. Southeast was one of only four teams in the Ohio Valley Conference to have student-athletes named All-Americans and one of only two schools to have more than one student receive All-America recognition. The Redhawks were the only OVC team to have a first-team All-American. Congratulations, Redhawks.

No fall ball

I WAS wondering why girls fall softball at Oran HIgh School keeps getting turned down. They sent a survey home with the public school kids and the private school kids, but we have not heard officially yet. I have heard people say we were not going to get it again. No survey was done to get junior high baseball for the boys, and they have it set up to play this season.
