Fall sports accolades awarded to area student-athletes

Postseason honors for fall sports have been distributed, and a handful of area student-athletes have been recognized for outstanding performances in volleyball, softball and boys soccer.

While the bevy of all-state, all-region and all-conference teams are peppered with local standouts, only a select few earned the highest recognition of a first team all-state nod.

In boys soccer, Perryville junior Dylan Jannin was named the Class 2 Co-Defender of the Year -- alongside Dylan Erwin of St. Francis Borgia -- after helping his squad to a second-place finish in 2015, falling in the state championship match to O'Hara.

Along with Jannin, a number of his Pirate teammates were selected to the Class 2 first team, with senior forward Eann Bergman and senior midfielder Kyle Wood earning spots.

The area was well represented in softball among small schools, as the Class 1 first team featured the Chaffee freshman duo of Bridgette Swinford (outfielder) and Sydney Walker (infielder).

Swinford hit .340 with seven doubles; Walker batted .414 with 22 RBIs and 12 doubles.

The Red Devils came up short in the state quarterfinals against DeKalb.

In Class 2, Saxony Luthern infielder Grace Mirly, a senior, made the cut.

In Class 3, the Notre Dame pair of Morgan Duschell, a junior catcher, and Christina Scherer, a senior outfielder, both received recognition on the first team.

Duschell hit a team-high .495 with 36 runs scored, a .602 slugging percentage and 24 RBIs. Scherer hit .481 with 13 RBIs and 35 runs scored, as Notre Dame fell in the Class 3 championship to Warrenton.

The lone local volleyball first-team representative was St. Vincent senior Katie Verseman, who helped the Indians to a Class 1 District 3 title.
