Southeast Missouri State baseball player Clayton Evans has earned a major honor following his impressive freshman season.

Evans on Wednesday was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. The team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features six Ohio Valley Conference players.

Evans, an outfielder who made 49 starts this year, finished third on the Redhawks with a .325 batting average. He was also third with a .416 on-base percentage and .438 slugging percentage.

The graduate of Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton, Mo., had two home runs, two triples, eight doubles and 24 RBIs. He stole eight bases in 10 attempts.

Evans was also named to the OVC all-freshman team this year.

Gymnastics

The Southeast gymnastics team earned a public recognition award for academic performance from the NCAA on Wednesday. The awards are given to teams scoring in the top 10 percent of the multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR), which is part of the NCAA's academic reform program. The multi-year APR is measured through the 2011-12 academic year.

This is the third straight year that gymnastics has earned the honor. The Redhawks recorded a 3.736 grade-point average, the highest in the athletic department and second highest among all NCAA gymnastics teams, during the 2011-12 academic year. Each gymnast posted a 3.58 GPA or higher.

Multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams will be announced on June 11. That announcement will also include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing squads.
