Errors cost Oran in loss to Cooter

Cooter scored six times in the second inning and got solid pitching from Aaron McCaig to defeat Oran in a high school baseball game Friday.

Mistakes in the field proved costly for the Eagles, as they committed an uncharacteristic four errors in the contest.

Charles Copeland ripped an offering from Oran starter Steven Dooley over the left-center field fence for a grand slam in the second.

With two outs in the same inning, Cooter (12-2) got a gift when the Oran right fielder could not catch a routine fly ball, allowing a run to score and extending the inning. The Wildcats took advantage of the extra out, as Josh Hutton hit a two-out single to drive in the sixth run for Cooter in the inning.

"We didn't play very well today," Oran coach Mitch Wood said. "We didn't pitch great and errors cost us the game. That happens sometimes in high school baseball. The error in right field and the misplay in the infield in the second was big. Can't allow those type of things to happen against a good team."

Oran's bats finally came alive in the third inning against McCaig. Kody Campbell knocked in a pair then scored on Tyler Beardslee's single.

Oran committed two errors in the fourth that allowed two more runs to score.

"We got beat by the better team," Wood said. "We can't give up eight runs and expect to win. I think Dooley tried to overthrow early and he got the ball up. Once they started to hit, he dropped his head and we have to work on that."

Festus 10, Central 9

Festus rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat the Tigers.

Blake Slattery and Garrett Stevens both connected on two-run homers in the loss.

Central starter Chris Brotherton earned a no-decision after going 5 2/3 innings and striking out four.

Red Devils Classic

Scott City scored a run in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and moved into the semifinals of the Red Devils Classic with a 5-4 win over Bell City.

Ryan Modglin, Shae Simmons, Cody Carlyle and Blake Dirnberger had two hits apiece for the Rams. Dirnberger pitched the first five innings for the win, and Simmons closed out the game for the save.

Scott City will play Shawnee in a semifinal today.

Shawnee shut out Saxony Lutheran 4-0. Clay Murphy struck out 11 in a one-hit complete game.

Cody Collins hit a three-run home run for Malden to push the Green Wave into the semifinals with a 4-3 win over Perryville. Malden will face Egyptian, a 6-3 winner over host Chaffee.

Ryan Lorenz took the loss for the Pirates. Lorenz allowed four runs on six hits.

Andy Hendrix and Zach McDaniel had two hits apiece for Chaffee in the loss. The Red Devils fell behind 6-0 early after a six-run second inning.

SOFTBALLOran Tournament

Scott City, Oran, Delta and Saxony Lutheran all came up victorious in pool play in the six-team Oran Softball Tournament.

Area spring softball powers Scott City (10-1) and Delta (8-1) will face off today with a spot in the finals on the line. In the other pool, Saxony Lutheran (5-2) and Oran (7-1) will play for the other berth in the championship game.

In one pool, Oran and Saxony Lutheran each blanked East Prairie, winning 5-0 and 4-0, respectively.

Callie Kielhofner struck out five and walked one in a two-hit shutout for Oran. Wendy Eftink had four hits for the Eagles.

Courtney Shelton also held East Prairie to two hits in Saxony's win.

Emily Essner struck out 10 in Scott City's 15-0 win over Clearwater. Scott City had 11 hits from 11 different players.

Kaci Menz had four hits and Taylor Smith had four RBIs in Delta's 18-1 win over Clearwater.
