A 20-year buzzzzz ends
with Fredericktown's swat
STE. GENEVIEVE -- Valle of Ste. Gen and Ste. Genevieve have been pesky flies hanging around Fredericktown for so long, that many of the Blackcats players weren't even alive when their school won those games.
Fredericktown coach Kent Gibbs and the Black Cats have finally broken out the fly swatters.
After beating Ste. Gen for the first time in 16 years two weeks ago, Fredericktown ended a 20-year drought to Valle Friday night with a 41-20 victory.
"For us, it's a big win," Gibbs said.
Fredericktown's offense broke out of a slump, racking up 424 yards of offense. The Blackcats had three backs with more than 100 yards. Quarterback Clay Hendrix had 120 yards on 15 carries, Derek Smith had 110 yards on 15 and Rusty Leonard carried the ball 14 times for 104 yards.
"The offensive line had an outstanding game and we were able to control the clock," Gibbs said.
Fredericktown (3-2) led 28-14 at halftime and 40-14 before Valle (0-5) scored on the last play of the game.
Fredericktown's defense held Valle to 259 yards.
St. Vincent `D' keeps rolling
CRYSTAL CITY -- St. Vincent's defense posted its second shutout of the year in a 31-0 whopping of Crystal City.
The Indians have allowed an average of just eight points per game this season.
On Friday night, St. Vincent's defense held Crystal City to just 40 yards rushing and 57 yards passing. Crystal City had just one first down in the first half.
Robinson carries Sikeston -- 30 times
SIKESTON -- It's scary to think where Sikeston would be right now if Justin Robinson wasn't on the team.
Robinson ran the ball 30 times for 221 yards Friday night as Sikeston improved to 3-2 with a 28-21 win over Alton, Ill.
Robinson, basically Sikeston's only offensive threat and by far the leading rusher in the area this season, is six yards shy of the 1,000-yard plateau and, with his three touchdowns Friday night, has scored 13 TDs this season. His 6-yard touchdown run with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter was the game-winner.
There's no `D' in Charleston
CHARLESTON -- The Blue Jays allowed at least 36 points for the fourth time this season as Charleston lost 41-32 to Malden to fall to 1-4.
Charleston scored 12 points in the first quarter and 20 in the fourth, but were held scoreless in between.
Charleston's touchdowns in the fourth quarter came when Malden already had a 41-12 lead.
Jordy Mixon led Charleston with 195 yards on 14 carries. Malden's Brian Benford ran for 189 yards on 18 carries. Malden improved to 3-2.
Not just another Smith
CARUTHERSVILLE -- New Madrid standout running back Ricky Smith didn't have a lot of rushing yards, but he dominated nonetheless as the 10th-ranked Class 3A Eagles (5-0) rolled over Caruthersville 52-7.
Smith ran for just 78 yards on eight carries, but he scored four first-quarter touchdowns on offense and ran back an interception for a score on defense in the second, giving him a Southeast Missouri high 21 touchdowns in five games this season.
Smith's touchdowns led to a 26-0 lead after the first quarter and the Eagles led 46-0 at halftime.
