CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Charleston High School track star DJ Williams solidified his status as a true champion of high school track and field, commanding attention as he guided his team to victory in the MSHSAA Class 2 State Championship. With remarkable performances in two state championship-winning relays, Williams left spectators in absolute awe and etched his name in the annals of excellence. His extraordinary season reached its pinnacle when he stood tall on Friday, July 14, at La Croix Church, accepting the coveted title of Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year during the Semoball Awards.
"I'm truly honored to be recognized as the top track athlete in the area. It's a validation of all the hard work I've put in," Williams shared with genuine enthusiasm. "Honestly, I never even imagined that I would be nominated, so receiving this award means a lot to me. It shows that people notice and appreciate the effort I've been putting in. This recognition will only push me to strive for more. It's a reminder that my hard work can take me far, and I'm motivated to grind even harder to achieve my goals."
Williams showcased his exceptional talent as he anchored the victorious 4x100-meter and 4x200 relay teams at the state meet, securing gold medals for Charleston High School. In addition, he demonstrated his versatility by claiming a commendable third place in the 400 event and a respectable seventh place in the 200 event.
Reflecting on his event choices, Williams explained, "What attracted me to these events was the inherent challenge they presented. I'm always eager to explore new opportunities, and the 400 race was a fresh endeavor for me. Surprisingly, it turned out to be something I excelled at when I devoted more effort to it. As for the relays, they provided a unique appeal due to the exceptional camaraderie and chemistry I shared with my teammates. The synergy and teamwork we cultivated greatly contributed to our success.
“When I was in eighth grade, I decided to try track,” Williams continued. “From the moment I stepped onto the track for my first meet, I was captivated by the sport. It was an instant love affair that had endured ever since.”
However, what also fueled Williams’ passion for running and kept him committed is Bluejay coach Justin Hutchings.
“He saw potential in me that I hadn’t recognized within myself,” Williams said. “He relentlessly pushed me to become the athlete I am today. Coach Hutchings played a pivotal role in shaping my journey in the sport, consistently believing in me to surpass my expectations. He has been a guiding force, not just in track and field, but also in shaping me as an individual. I am forever grateful for his support and the impact he has had on my life.”
Williams will continue his athletic and academic journey at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. He also expressed his interest in potentially pursuing a coaching career in track in the future.
Reflecting on his path to success, Williams shared a heartfelt message for aspiring young athletes, saying, “I would say don’t give up and keep going no matter what. You will always have setbacks but that’s just part of getting better, so don’t let that stop you. Stay positive and use your competition as motivation don’t get scared if somebody is faster, just use that as an extra boost and go harder.”
