SIKESTON — Month after silencing bats from around the globe at Capaha Park, the Southeast Tropics finally got their bling.
The 2023 Babe Ruth 18U World Series champs celebrated with a ring ceremony, adding a permanent sparkle to their legacy.
“It was a great ceremony,” said Mason Adams. “It was a chance to reunite the whole team, one last time. Some of these guys won't be back next year, but seeing them get their rings, knowing all the sweat and sacrifice they poured into this program... it was surreal."
The Southeast Tropics' path to glory began with a gut punch: a first-game loss to the Alabama Rawdogs.
But this wasn't a team built to crumble. They responded with five straight wins, silencing bats from Down Under and the Far East. Australia's power hitters and China's finesse tactics proved no match for the Tropics' fiery resolve.
The stage was then set for a rematch with the Rawdogs in the championship game, their opening-day demons waiting in the batter's box. This time, though, the story was different. With a nail-biting 3-2 victory.
“It was amazing,” said Dalton Forck. “Coach [Dustin] Schwartz told us in our huddle after the game that not a lot of people can call themselves world champs. Just the fact I can say that is amazing. The moment was crazy. Coming in as a sub I grew a brotherhood with those kids very quickly. Just seeing us succeed at the end was a fulfilling moment.”
The Southeast Tropics' championship run isn't over yet. The Babe Ruth 18U World Series returns to Capaha Park next summer, and the champs will get a shot at defending their title on home turf.
“It felt good finally getting the rings,” said Trey Benthal. “Putting the ring on my finger just brought back all the memories from that week at Capaha Park. I loved every moment of that week and am so thankful for the opportunity. The moment felt good. I enjoyed the night with great food and good people and I’m looking forward to this summer with the guys again and hopefully, we can do it again. That’s the goal.”
