CHAFFEE, Mo. — Sikeston’s softball team fell short with a 9-3 loss at Chaffee on Thursday, September 21, but Cambree Scott’s exceptional season continued as the sophomore catcher notched three hits, including a double, adding to her impressive team-leading stats in batting average (542), on-base percentage (.607), hits (13), doubles (6), triples (one), stolen bases (2) and runs scored (9).

“[Scott] has gained confidence at the plate and I am very proud of her and the way she has stepped up,” said Sikeston coach Alli Conder. “She can get on base either by hitting or bunting and has started to become more aggressive at the plate which I think has helped a lot. She is a great base runner and understands when to be aggressive. She’s also solid behind the plate and can make big plays when we need her to.

“She’s great at helping positively give advice at practice or during games and she brings a lot of energy to the team,” she continued. “Since she’s only a sophomore, I’m looking forward to seeing her develop more as a player and leader over the next two years and I’m very glad that she’s a part of our program and will be for the next couple of years.”

The Lady Bulldogs (2-5) gained an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Chloe Hamby single on a ground ball to score Dakota Thompson and Scott scored on fielder’s choice.

However, the Lady (14-3) answered with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another three runs in the next inning to extend the lead to 8-2.

“We started pretty strong offensively and came out aggressively,” Conder said. “I was happy with the way we hit the ball overall last night and how we worked the counts and made the opposing pitchers work. We let one inning get away from us a little and couldn’t capitalize on certain situations, but we have improved a good amount from the first time we played them.”

Sikeston narrowed the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth inning when Abigail DeShaney scored on a wild pitch.

Reese Van Pelt earned the win after throwing the first three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Chloe Hamby took the loss after pitching six innings and surrendering eight earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and four walked batters.

Sikeston will compete in the Doniphan Tournament, beginning Saturday, September 23., while Poplar Bluff will host Neelyville (6-4) on Monday, September 25.
