While the high school basketball season still has more than a month left in it, seven girls basketball teams will fight for the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament crown starting today in Chaffee.
Delta is the top seed and is coming off a tournament win at the Delta New Year's tournament. The Bobcats (9-1) will have a first-round bye and will play the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 4 Scott County Central and No. 5 Scott City.
With two freshmen starters and a lineup with no seniors, Delta coach Randy White said he likes the idea of getting a couple of more games under the Bobcats' belts.
"These kids need to play a lot of games," he said.
In other first-round matchups, No. 2 Kelly plays No. 7 East Prairie at 7 p.m. tonight and No. 3 Charleston plays No. 6 Chaffee on Wednesday. The championship game is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Scott City spreads Christmas joy
Members of the Scott City boys basketball team took time from their school and basketball schedules during the holiday season to help raise money, food and clothing as part of the St. Francis Family Christmas Drive.
Rams players raised roughly $450, using donations from local businesses as well as their own money. The players also donated enough clothing and canned goods to fill the bed of coach Lance Amick's truck.
Jackson, Central set for double dual
Jackson and Central's wrestling teams will head south to Dexter on Thursday for one of two double duals on their schedules this season.
Both Central and Jackson will face Poplar Bluff and Dexter. Central is 2-2 in duals.
Jackson has not lost a dual this season and already has two tournament wins, including the Tiger Classic.
After competing in the two duels on Thursday, both Central and Jackson will head to the St. Charles Tournament this weekend.
