Kelly High School junior Adam Daughhetee successfully defended his Class 2A state title in the mile run Friday, obliterating the competition by five seconds.
Scott City's freshman phenom, Loren Groves, meanwhile had an impressive day as well, taking second place in the discus.
Daughhetee ran the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 26 seconds. He will compete in the 3,200-meter run today and has posted the best time in that event among the state's field. He will also anchor Kelly's 4x800 team today.
Groves tossed the discus 118 feet, 3 inches, about 15 feet shy of the state champion. Groves took firsts in her preliminary heats in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Barring a disqualification, she'll be a three-event all-state performer.
"That's awesome for anybody, let alone a freshman," Scott City coach Randall White said.
Groves ran the 100 hurdles in 15.6 seconds, only .01 faster than her next closest competitor. She ran the 300 hurdles in 47.1 seconds.
Chaffee's Jennifer Vandeven missed out on qualifying to the championship race in the 400 meter by .12 seconds. She took ninth in the preliminaries.

Owen advances
ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Cape Central's Mary Beth Owen posted the fourth-best time in the 500 freestyle preliminaries at the state meet Friday and is almost certain to receive all-state status.
The top eight are considered all-staters, so with only eight competing in the race today, Owen only has to complete the race without disqualification. Owen finished Friday's race in 5:12.68.
"She didn't swim her normal stroke today," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "If she gets it back tomorrow, she'll go faster."
Terra Herzberger finished 25th in the butterfly with a time of 1:06.47.
Central divers Sara Sprigg and Becky Keller will compete today.
