D-backs give Martinez his first loss

BOSTON -- Baseball's winningest pitcher had his way with baseball's winningest team.

Curt Schilling and the Arizona Diamondbacks handed Pedro Martinez his first loss, beating the Boston Red Sox 3-2 Saturday to remain perfect at Fenway Park.

Schilling (12-1) allowed six hits and two walks over 7 1/3 innings, striking out nine to improve his major league-leading victory total.

Byung-Hyun Kim got the final four outs for his 16th save, and second in two days.

The Red Sox lost their fourth in a row at home.

Arizona has won both games so far in its first-ever visit to Fenway Park, where Schilling took the loss when he faced Martinez in the 1999 All-Star game.

Martinez (7-1) gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks and struck out 10 as Boston fell to 40-19 -- still the best record in baseball.

Giants 4, Yankees 3

NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds made his first Yankee Stadium home run a memorable one, and San Francisco found a way to beat Mariano Rivera (1-3).

Bonds hit one of the most impressive homers ever at baseball's most famous ballpark and the Giants took advantage of Alfonso Soriano's error to break a 3-all tie in the ninth inning.

Bonds hit a three-run homer almost halfway up the upper-deck in right field in the first, his 21st this season and the 588th of his career. He has now homered in all 27 ballparks he has played in.

Nick Johnson hit a three-run homer for New York, which committed three errors and managed only two hits against Jason Schmidt (2-1), who also struck out a career-high 13 in eight innings. Robb Nen pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Blue Jays 3, Rockies 1

TORONTO -- Vernon Wells and Carlos Delgado homered in the seventh inning, leading Pete Walker and Toronto over Colorado.

Walker (2-0) and relievers Cliff Politte and Kelvim Escobar combined on a four-hitter. Escobar pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances. The Blue Jays have won eight of nine, and are 5-1 under new manager Carlos Tosca.

The Rockies have lost five of six. They are 8-26 away from Coors Field in six seasons of interleague play.

Colorado starter John Thomson (6-5) only allowed two infield singles before Delgado tied it at 1 in the seventh with his 15th homer.

Mariners 4, Cubs 2

SEATTLE -- Freddy Garcia won his fourth straight start, and Desi Relaford drove in three runs for Seattle.

Garcia (8-4), who hasn't lost since May 19, shut out the Cubs until Todd Hundley homered with one out in the seventh.

Garcia improved to 6-3 in interleague play. He allowed five hits in seven innings and lowered his ERA to 3.20.

Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 17 opportunities. He gave up an RBI single to Hundley.

Beaten 2-0 by rookie Mark Prior on Friday night, the Mariners jumped on Matt Clement (4-4) for a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Athletics 5, Astros 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Miguel Tejada homered in a five-run fourth inning, and rookie Aaron Harang made the lead stand up for Oakland.

The resurgent A's have won seven of nine, upping their record to 31-30. They had not been above .500 since May 8, when they were 17-16.

Harang (2-1) allowed six hits over 6 1-3 scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 0.93. He walked four and struck out two.

Called up from Triple-A Sacramento on May 25, Harang has given up just three runs -- two earned -- in his first three starts.

Houston has lost five of six. Shane Reynolds (3-6) unraveled for his shortest outing of the season and his third straight loss.

Reds 4, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Russell Branyan drove in two runs in his Reds debut, and Aaron Boone hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning as Cincinnati beat Anaheim.

Ken Griffey Jr. did not play because of a strained right hamstring he hurt Friday night. Reds manager Bob Boone said he hoped the injury was minor, "but we won't know for a few days."

Branyan, traded from Cleveland to Cincinnati for a minor leaguer Friday, had an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly, both with the bases loaded.

Gabe White (3-1) earned the victory, and Danny Graves got three outs for his 19th save in 24 chances.

Dennis Cook (1-1) took the loss.

Twins 5, Marlins 3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jacque Jones and Torii Hunter each drove in two runs to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Florida Marlins.

The Twins won their third straight and are a major league-best 23-10 at home.

Cliff Floyd and Mike Lowell hit back-to-back homers for the Marlins, who began the weekend with the best interleague record, 51-33, over the past five years but have dropped their first two against the Twins.

Matt Kinney (2-5) finally got a victory, his first in eight starts. Eddie Guardado worked the ninth for his 18th save in 20 opportunities.

Kevin Olsen (0-4) gave up seven hits and four runs in 4 1-3 innings.

Luis Castillo extended his Marlins' record hitting streak to 25 games with a perfectly placed bunt to begin the game.

Dodgers 8, Orioles 4

BALTIMORE -- Kazuhisa Ishii overcame a rocky start to earn his 10th win, and Shawn Green and Mark Grudzielanek homered as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Baltimore Orioles.

After giving up a three-run homer to Tony Batista in the first inning, Ishii rebounded to become the first Dodgers starter to go 10-1 since Doug Rau in 1977.

Jason Johnson (1-4), making his first start since April 20 after a stint on the disabled list with a broken finger, yielded four runs and five hits in six innings.

Mets 8, Indians 6

CLEVELAND -- Mike Piazza capped New York's seven-run rally in the seventh inning with a three-run homer off Paul Shuey, and the Mets held on to beat the Cleveland Indians.

Piazza, who didn't start behind the plate because he was still feeling the effects of dehydration, connected for his 11th homer in the seventh off Shuey, who had gone 56 consecutive appearances without giving up a homer.

Cleveland's Omar Vizquel homered twice and had five RBIs.

Edgardo Alfonzo hit a two-run single in the seventh for the Mets, who weren't getting clutch hits before they came to Cleveland and didn't have much success in the first six innings against Chuck Finley (4-7).

Steve Trachsel (4-6) beat the Indians for the first time in his four career starts against them, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. Armando Benitez worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Expos 2, White Sox 1

CHICAGO -- Vladimir Guerrero hit a go-ahead homer leading off the ninth inning, giving the Montreal Expos a win over the Chicago White Sox.

Guerrero hit his 15th home run, sending the first pitch from Keith Foulke (0-4) over the fence in dead center field.

The Expos won their third in a row and sent the White Sox to their 11th loss in 13 games.

Scott Stewart (1-1) got the victory and T.J. Tucker pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Phillies 2, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Travis Lee's RBI single in the eighth broke a tie to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers.

The Phillies ruined the major league debut of Mike Maroth, who pitched seven scoreless innings, but left after 95 pitches.

Danny Patterson (0-2) came in to start the eighth and gave up a one-out triple to Bobby Abreu. Pat Burrell tied the game with a bloop single over a drawn-in infield. After Jeremy Giambi walked, Lee drove him in with two out.

Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances.

Detroit has lost nine of its last 10 games.

Robert Person (2-3) allowed one run on four hits in seven innings.

Devil Rays 3, Padres 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Steve Cox singled home the winning run in the 10th inning to give the Tampa Bay Devil Rays a victory over the San Diego Padres.

Ron Gant homered off Tampa Bay starter Tanyon Sturtze with one out in the top of the ninth inning to tie it at 2.

Randy Winn hit a leadoff single off Alan Embree (3-4) in the 10th and went to second after Embree fielded Jason Conti's bunt and made a bad throw that pulled shortstop Deivi Cruz off second base for an error.

Winn then stole third uncontested and scored on Cox's bloop hit into shallow center field.

Victor Zambrano (2-4) worked a scoreless inning for the victory.

Pirates 9, Brewers 8

PITTSBURGH -- Craig Wilson lined a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9-8 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.

Jack Wilson opened the inning with a double for his first career four-hit game. Jason Kendall singled off the body of pitcher Ray King (1-2) and Brian Giles was intentionally walked.

With Pittsburgh's bench depleted, pitcher Kip Wells pinch-hit and struck out. Wilson then hit a 0-1 pitch to left to give the Pirates their second consecutive win.
