AKRON, Ohio -- British Open champion Ben Curtis, who is getting married this weekend, had a 6-under 64 Thursday and shared the first-round lead of the NEC Invitational with Sergio Garcia.
Tiger Woods, who has won the last three times at Firestone, shot a 65.
Curtis' wedding originally was scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday in the suburb of Stow, about a 30-minute drive from Firestone. The invitations were mailed before Curtis, a 500-1 long shot, won the British Open and became the first player in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try.
Garcia, who like Curtis missed the cut at the PGA Championship last week, birdied four straight holes in the middle of his round, the last three from inside 2 feet.
Darren Clarke joined Woods at 65.
Reno-Tahoe Open
RENO, Nev. -- Bob Tway, Kirk Triplett, Paul Stankowski, Steve Pate and Andy Miller had 5-under 67s to share the lead at the Reno-Tahoe Open before a Sierra thunderstorm suspended play for the day.
Luke Donald, J.P. Hayes, Dennis Paulson and Cameron Beckman were a stroke back, but more than half of the field was unable to complete the round at the Montreux Golf & Country Club.
LPGA Tour
KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Emilee Klein birdied her last three holes in a 6-under 66 and held a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Wachovia LPGA Classic.
Meg Mallon, Carin Koch, Dawn Coe-Jones, Soo-Yun Kang and Sunny Lee were tied for second at the Berkleigh Country Club course.
U.S. Amateur
OAKMONT, Pa. --David Oh pulled off the biggest upset of the 103rd U.S. Amateur, a second-round ouster of long-hitting Trip Kuehne that left the exasperated loser sobbing.
Oh, whose previous biggest accomplishment was winning the non-PGA Long Beach Open, was on pace to shoot a 1-under 69 at one of the world's most difficult courses before closing out the match on No. 17 and winning 3 and 1. Oh now meets Wake Forest star Bill Haas, the son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas in today's quarterfinals.
