Cross country season opens with Jackson Invitational

JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Central's Kim Pancoast won the senior division of the 20-team Jackson Invitational Saturday, completing the 2.35-mile course in 14 minutes, 53 seconds, a Cape Central school record at the course at Jackson Park.

Central freshman Jennifer Pancoast took second in the freshman race at 13:54 on the 1.95-mile course.

Several area runners medaled, but Pancoast was the only local athlete to take first place in any of the eight races. There was a boys and girls race for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Jackson won the freshmen girls race, placing four in the top 10 and six in the top 15.

"Our freshmen did pretty well," Jackson coach Andrea Talley said. "And we had some out with injuries too".

Fox won the senior boys race with a score of 30, while Northwest House Springs won the senior girls race. Lindbergh won the junior girls title, while Northwest posted the best score on the boys side.

ST. LOUIS -- The Lady Tigers, mired in an offensive slump lately, busted out in a big way, getting 15 hits to improve to 3-5.

Ashley Foutch went 5-for-5 with three doubles and five runs batted in.

Holly Schnurbusch went 3-for-5 and picked up the win on the mound as well. She went seven innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four.

"We've been patient," said Cape Central coach Amy Blattell. "We knew our bats would come around and they did today. I'm proud of them. We got four runs in the first inning and we didn't let up."

Central's junior varsity claimed a 13-4 win. Tara Ford was the winning pitcher.

ND WINS SOFTBALLFEST

Notre Dame won two games in its last at-bat Saturday to win its Softballfest and improve to 7-0.

The Lady Bulldogs beat St. Pius 7-6 in the championship on an RBI single by Mika Williamson that scored Katlyn Kelly.

Notre Dame beat St. Vincent 6-5 in the semifinal, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, two of which came on a two-out double by freshman Alana Weissmueller.

In the championship game, Notre Dame scored six runs on five hits in the first inning then didn't manage another hit until the seventh.

"These girls like to make these games exciting," Notre Dame coach Chris Janet said.

Lindsay Reinagel got the win. She went seven innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Kelly had two hits.

Reinagel got the win and Kelly had two hits in the semifinal game, too. But Reinagel picked up the win in one inning of relief.

Williamson pitched six innings for a no-decision. She allowed four runs on three hits, three walks and two hit batsmen. She struck out six.

The Tigers got off to a emphatic start to the season as running back Brandon Twiggs rushed for three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion.

Gabe Edwards ran for two touchdowns and Danny Hayes scored a 2-point conversion
