St. Vincent junior Levi Krauss was the first runner to cross the finish line in 17 minutes, 24.80 seconds to help lead the Indians to victory at Saturday's Class 1 District 1 cross country meet in Dexter.
St. Vincent had four of its runners finish in the top 10 for a first-place team score of 35 points in what was the second consecutive district championship for the Indians.
"The boys performed exactly as they were hoping to," St. Vincent coach Terry Wood said. "We came in with some high expectations and they delivered quite well on them. To see that we finished as strongly as we did, it was quite a feat for them."
Runners on the top two teams and individuals who place in the top 15 qualify for the state meet.
The Indians finished 15 points ahead of Zalma. Wood praised the Bulldogs on their performance at the meet.
"I have to give props to Zalma," he said. "They came on really strong towards the end of the season and they gave us a fight, which is exactly what we needed."
Brothers Jacob and Alex Steinberg finished second and third, respectively, for Zalma while sophomore Peyton Ford placed fifth for the Bulldogs. Third-year coach Faith Bailey said she was proud of her team, which has endured several hardships throughout the season.
"Every single runner that we took to districts is going to state, and that is profound for a little itty-bitty school like us," Bailey said. "Coming into this year, we were hoping to progress towards first, but we had a lot of personal injuries, a lot of injuries, and things that just made the season really tough for us, so to pull out second, that was what we were hoping for."
St. Vincent and Zalma will compete at the Class 1 state meet on Saturday at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City, Mo.
On the girls side, St. Vincent had three runners finish in the top 10 to take second place overall. Wood said this is the second year that he has had a full girls program at St. Vincent. Zalma freshman Chelsey Lemons placed 11th to also qualify for state. Bailey said this is the first year that every single runner from Zalma has qualified to compete at the state meet.
Oak Ridge juniors Zach Moore and Nathan Bolin placed seventh and 10th to round out the top 10. The Blue Jays finished third in the team standings.
