It’d be hard to beat the success Chaffee’s Carlyanne Cossou has had athletically in her freshman year.
Whether it was leading the Red Devils to the state championship game in softball or helping lead the girls' basketball team to an impressive 16-9 season, Cossou has done it all.
And now, she’s dominating on the track.
“I love being active all year long,” Cossou said. “I love succeeding so I love putting in hard work behind the scenes.”
Cossou entered the Class 2 District 1 meet with the fastest time in the 100m hurdles and the second fastest time in the 300m hurdles.
Her first event was the 100m hurdles where she won with a time of 15.91.
The second fastest time was Saxony’s Abigail Haley finishing with a time of 17.20.
With the top four finishers in every event qualifying for next week’s sectionals at Park Hills, Cossou clinched a spot in the 100m hurdles with her performance.
“I am so pumped,” Cossou said. “With it being my first year experiencing this I’m a little bit nervous but it’s very exciting.”
Cossou’s second event was the triple jump, where she posted a mark of 10.40 meters to win the Class 2 District 1 meet and earn a trip to sectionals at Park Hills.
In her final event, the 300m hurdles, Cossou clinched yet another berth to the sectionals with a second-place finish with a time of 50.30, just behind Charleston’s Treasure Kimble who finished with a time of 49.06.
What makes Cossou’s accomplishments even more impressive is the fact that Chaffee has been without a track.
“I’ve been doing lots of drills on the side,” Cossou said. “We drive almost every other day to other schools that are willing to let us use their track. It’s been difficult and a hard task to overcome but we’ve definitely put in the work to make us stronger.”
Essentially, Cossou gets maybe three days a week to run events like hurdles, and yet she is still able to perform at a high level.
“I’m just trying to get back to the good feel of it,” Cossou said, “because we can’t throughout the week so I really have to make sure I’m locked in for the race.”
At the SEMO Conference Meet on April 27, Cossou became the first Chaffee athlete to finish top three overall in two individual events at the conference meet.
Cossou finished first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.57 and she finished third in the 300m hurdles with a time of 49.63.
Cossou will compete at the Class 2 Sectional Meet next Saturday, May 11, at Park Hills Central.
