One of the key players for Cape Girardeau Central High School's highly successful girls basketball team will be taking her game to the junior-college level.
Central senior Kim Aslinger, a 5-foot-8 point guard, recently signed a letter of intent with Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Ill.
Aslinger helped lead the Lady Tigers to an 18-7 record this past season, when she averaged a team-high 12.7 points per game to go along with 3.4 steals and 3.0 assists. A team captain, Aslinger shot 69 percent from the free-throw line.
"Kim was a very valuable player for us," said Central coach Darrick Smith. "Defensively, she was one of our key players, and she was also a good offensively player. We had some games where basically we had to give her the ball and say go, where she had to carry the load for us offensively."
Smith believes that Aslinger, a three-year varsity letterwinner and a two-year varsity starter, will fit in well at Shawnee right away.
"She can handle the ball and she's willing to play defense, which will give her the opportunity to play right away," Smith said. "If you leave her open, she can score. She can also run the show and get everybody where they need to be. She'll definitely help them."
Aslinger is also one of the top players for Central's girls soccer team that is having a sensational season.
