Jane Morrill's sophomore season is off to a great start for the Arkansas State women's basketball team.
Morrill, who graduated from Notre Dame Regional High School, was named the Sun Belt Conference player of the week Tuesday.
Morrill, a 6-foot-1 forward, scored a career-high 31 points in Arkansas State's 84-71 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. She scored 23 points in the second half.
Morrill shot 54 percent (13 of 24) from the floor and went 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. She added eight rebounds.
"I'm happy for Jane," Arkansas State coach Brian Boyer said in a release. "Her second half against Corpus Christi was one of the most impressive halves of basketball I have seen by an individual while at Arkansas State. Jane is still just scratching the surface of how good she can be, and with her strong work ethic she is going to continue to improve all season long."
Morrill was averaging 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game entering Wednesday's game at Tulsa.
Morrill and her Arkansas State teammates will play Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday at the Show Me Center.
Notre Dame Regional High School graduate Ryan Willen has helped the Lafayette College men's basketball team start the season 3-2.
The 6-8 forward is averaging a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game. He's also averaging 17.6 points.
Willen is shooting .585 (24 of 41) from the floor, including .412 on 3-pointers (7-17).
Willen helped lead Notre Dame to the Class 4 state title during his senior season in 2008.
Central graduate Eric Schott was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association freshman of the year in cross country.
Schott, who competes for Missouri Southern, finished ninth in the conference meet. He covered the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 33.38 seconds.
Schott then competed in the NCAA Division I South Central Regional, where he crossed the finish line 22nd. Schott traversed the 10K course in 32:30.20.
Notre Dame Regional High School graduate Meghan Dohogne helped the Mineral Area College women's volleyball team place 10th at the NJCAA national championships in West Plains, Mo.
Mineral Area went 2-2 at the tournament.
The Cardinals defeated Wallace State 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 and Miami Dade 28-26, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23.
Dohogne, a 5-11 sophomore hitter, recorded eight kills against Wallace State. She averaged 2.223 kills per set this season for Mineral Area, which finished the season 35-7.
