Missouri high school football coaches honored Central by placing six Tigers on its all-state team this week.
Colin Schermann was a first-team all-state pick by the Missouri Football Coaches Association. He finished 36-of-41 on extra points and made seven field goals with a long of 51 yards. Schermann also kicked 32 kickoffs for touchbacks.
On the second team were quarterback Mitch Craft, offensive lineman Darren Neels and punter Clay Schermann. Craft, this year's Southeast Missourian Player of the Year, finished his senior year with 2,097 yards passing with a completion percentage of 57. Craft also ran for 456 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with his 12 touchdown passes.
Neels was a three-year starter who was an integral part of both the offensive and defensive line. Schermann finished with a 38-yard punting average.
Rounding out Central's honored players were offensive lineman Sean Bard and wide receiver Mark Dunaway, who made the honorable mention team. Dunaway had 35 catches for 687 yards and six touchdowns. Dunaway also led the team in pass deflections on defense. Bard started the past two years on the line for the Tigers.
Perryville's Matt Unterreiner made the second team as a returner.
Chris Kline of St. Vincent made the Class 1 first-team team at linebacker. St. Vincent's Mark Prost made the second team on the offensive line.
Area basketball teams ranked in first state poll
Several area basketball teams made the first state top 10 list released Wednesday.
Notre Dame's girls are ranked second in Class 4 after winning the consolation bracket of the Farmington Tournament. The Bulldogs are 4-1 and will face St. Joseph's Academy, the No. 2 team in Class 5, on Saturday.
Kelly's girls are ranked eighth and are 3-1.
On the boys side, Bell City is sixth in Class 1. Bell City finished second in the Oran Tournament and recently routed rival Advance.
Jackson to honor former girls basketball coach
Longtime Jackson girls basketball coach Ron Cook will be honored prior to the Indians' game on Saturday.
Cook retired after leading Jackson to the state final four last season. A reception will be held after the game. Jackson will face Cor Jesu at 4:30 p.m.
College note
Quincy freshman Alex Wieser, a Central graduate, led Quincy with a career-high 15 points Sunday in a win over Southern Indiana. Wieser added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in only 24 minutes of play. Quincy improved to 6-2 and is ranked 20th in the Division II poll.
