JEFFERSON CITY -- After preliminaries and a few field events only a handful of area athletes had all-state performances or advanced to the finals in today's Class 4A state track and field championships.

Central's Heather Jenkins took fifth place in the shot put at 39 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Jackson's Heidi Jansen, who finished ahead of Jenkins in the sectional meet last Saturday, took ninth with a throw of 36-5 1/4.

The top eight finishers in each event are considered all-state performers.

Jenkins will participate in the discus today.

Jackson's Mario Whitney posted the fourth-best time in the 100-meter preliminary with a time of 10.96 to advance to the finals.

He finished behind defending state champ Charles McGhee (10.72) from Ladue, Parkway South's Mario Smith (10.75) and Riverview Garden's Damien Nash (10.86).

Whitney also qualified for the 200 finals with a time of 22.09. The time was the sixth fastest in the two heats.

3A track meet

JEFFERSON CITY Perryville's Shawn posted the third fastest time in the 100-meter dash in the preliminaries at the Class 3A state track and field championships.

Also for Perryville, Nathan Ruesler took 12th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.43. Becky Lankford took 13th for Perryville with a pole vault of 8-0 and the girls 4x400 team took 14th in 4:15.9

BOYS TENNIS

Blattner, Metzger in consolation semifinals

Cape Central's doubles team of Trevor Blattner and Mick Metzger lost its first match in the Class 4A doubles championship, but recovered with two wins in the consolation bracket.

In the first match, Blattner and Metzger fell to John Epoma and Jordan Mahaney of Jefferson City 6-1 and 6-4.

Then the Tiger duo knocked off Ilva Gusey and Scott Johnson of Pattonville 6-3 and 6-1. In the consolation quarterfinals, Blattner and Metzger beat Matt Gaebler and Blake Ryan 6-4 and 6-4.

Blattner and Metzger will take on a doubles team from Rockhurst today for a shot to play for fifth place.
