Charleston displayed a powerful combination of speed, athleticism and toughness, winning 65-42 at Portageville on Friday, Feb. 9.
“At this point in the season, we’re just looking for our guys to play 32 minutes of good basketball,” said Charleston coach Jamarcus Williams. “That’s what it going to take and that’s what we got. We’re also starting to get some other guys to score more consistently. That’s always a good thing.”
The Blue Jays (12-12) frustrated the Bulldogs (16-8) throughout the contest with Ko’Terrion leading the charge. Owens exploded for 18 points on an impressive 8-of-12 shooting performance. Owens wasn’t just a scoring threat, he also showcased his all-around talent with 10 rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Zachyran Thomas followed closely with 13 points, showcasing his accuracy with a 6-for-7 shooting night. Tayshon Clark added 12 points while maintaining efficiency with a 6-for-9 shooting performance.
Owen Willis chipped in with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
“I’m loving it having these guys step up,” Williams said. “Those are our bigger and stronger kids and I expect them to be able to do more. They’re stepping up to the challenge.”
While the offense clicked, Charleston’s defense proved equally impressive, leading to easy transition baskets and extending the lead throughout the game.
The Bulldogs’ leading scorer was Xayvion Bogan with 17 points.
Charleston hosts Cape Central (13-7) on Tuesday, Feb. 13, while Portageville travels to East Prairie (18-6) on Thursday, Feb. 15.
