Charleston High's girls tennis team had to go indoors to continue its district dominance.

The Lady Blue Jays captured their eighth consecutive district title Saturday when they won the Class 1A-3A, District 1 Tournament in Cape Girardeau.

The tourney was supposed to be played outdoors in one day at the Southeast Missouri State University courts. But rain forced the event to be held indoors Friday and Saturday at University Health & Fitness Center.

"I'm real proud of the girls," said Charleston coach Mitch Baker. "Winning eight district titles in a row is a tremendous accomplishment."

Charleston had 23 points to hold off Fredericktown, which had 21. Both squads qualify for next Saturday's team sectional competition in St. Louis.

Other team scores were: Arcadia Valley 18 1/2, Dexter 16 1/2, North County 12, Kennett 10 1/2, Potosi 5, Caruthersville 4, Chaffee 2 1/2, Park Hills 2 1/2, Malden 0.

Individually, the top two finishers in singles and doubles qualify for the state meet, set for Oct. 21-22 in Springfield.

Fredericktown's Erin Kinder claimed her second straight district singles title by beating Kennett's Heather Winston 8-0.

In doubles, Dexter's Julie Jarrell and Amy Rose defeated Charleston's Jodi Bledsoe and Katie Whitehead 8-4.

BOYS SOCCER

Notre Dame splits pair

FENTON -- Competing in the Optimist Shootout at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre, Notre Dame won its first game over highly-regarded St. Francis Borgia 1-0, but it was a costly victory.

The Bulldogs' Timmy Wencewicz suffered a broken leg on a hit from behind as he was kicking the ball; the injury will require surgery and Wencewicz is out for the season.

"It wasn't a dirty play or anything," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "They were both going for the ball at the same time."

Adam Obermiller scored the Bulldogs' lone goal at the 19:00 minute mark, with an assist from Cory Elfrink.

Michael Gosche had the shutout for Notre Dame.

The Bulldogs weren't as fortunate in the second game of the day, and the injury to Wencewicz may have been a factor as Notre Dame lost to Rolla, another strong team, 1-0.

Rolla was outshot 13-5 for the game, but the Bulldogs couldn't notch a goal, and fell to 14-3-1 on the season.

"Being the second game of the day we didn't have as much energy," said Wittenborn. "We probably deserved to win, but not having Timmy hurt us as far as our depth is concerned."

Wes Trueblood scored the only goal at the 8:00 minute mark for Rolla, with an assist by Matt Bruno.

"The play was a little more physical then we're used to," said Wittenborn. "We need to adjust our game to that; there was a lot of grabbing and pushing without penalties being called."

Notre Dame's JV Squad (5-4-1) split it's games by beating Borgia 4-0, and losing to Rolla 2-1. In the first game, Tyler Cuba had two goals and Jeff Brosey had one goal and an asssist. Travis Seabert scored the lone goal for Notre Dame in the second game.

Cape Central loses two

FENTON -- Also competing in the Optimist Shootout at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre, Central suffered a pair of shutout losses, falling to Rolla 1-0 and to Springfield Glendale 2-0.

Both games were scoreless at halftime, but the Tigers lagged in the second half as they fell to 11-9-1.

"Both teams are very good," said Central coach Tom Doyle of Rolla and Glendale. "We faced some excellent competition."

Glendale 2, Jackson 1

FENTON -- Jackson also took part in the Optimist Shootout at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre, playing just one game and suffering a narrow loss.

Springfield Glendale scored twice in the final 15 minutes as the Indians fell to 8-7-1. Jimmy Sievers had Jackson's goal.

CROSS COUNTRY

Potosi Invitational

It took a tie-breaker to decide who won the varsity boys team outcome, but both the Cape Central boys and girls cross country teams grabbed first place honors at the Potosi Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Both host Potosi and the Tigers finished first with 79 points, but Cape Central's sixth-place finisher (Ross Tillman, 18:15) ended with a better time, giving the Tiger runners the team victory.

The Lady Tigers' team victory (79) was paced by Lane Thomasson (20:23) who finished second and topped all area runners, while the Tigers were paced by Mark Stone (16:58), who finished 6th and was tops among all area boys.

"The main thing we wanted to focus on was to run as a team," said Cape Central coach Mark Hahn, "and I was extremely pleased with how we accomplished that."
