CHAFFEE, Mo. -- One day removed from winning the SEMO Baseball Conference Tournament championship, the Chaffee High Red Devils had their 16-game winning streak snapped Tuesday, 9-8 in eight innings by visiting South Pemiscot.
Chaffee (16-2), ranked second in the latest Class 2A state poll, owned a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, the Red Devils failed to cover first base on a ground ball to the first baseman and the floodgates opened.
"We could've had two outs with nobody on," Chaffee coach Brian Horrell said. "It just slipped away from us."
Zac Horman suffered the loss. He went the distance and allowed nine runs, four earned, on eight hits and five walks. He struck out five.
Perry Rice was Chaffee's only multiple hitter. He went 2-for-5 as he has now hit safely in all 18 games this season.
Chaffee, usually an outstanding fielding team, made four errors.
"We've got to find a way to get our intensity up," Horrell said. "For some reason, we couldn't get focused."
South Pemiscot scored two runs in the top of the eighth to break a 7-7 tie. Chaffee mounted a rally, scoring one run in the bottom half. But the Red Devils stranded runners at second and third when South Pemiscot's right fielder made a sliding catch to end the game.

Ruesler, Cowan and Fadler all had two hits as Oak Ridge improved to 7-4.
