The Chaffee-East Prairie game Friday night was anything but an offensive display.
The mud, the lack of traction and a wet pigskin had a lot to do with that.
"It was not a pretty game," Chaffee coach Allan Horrell said of his team's 20-0 victory.
While Chaffee's offense managed just 219 yards of total offense, the Red Devil defense held East Prairie to just 72 yards of offense. Chaffee, with the aid of the wet weather, forced seven fumbles and recovered four of them. Chaffee allowed just six first downs the entire game.
Chaffee (3-3) led 8-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at halftime.
Chaffee's Tommy Stidham had 82 yards on 23 carries, G.P. Glueck provided 74 yards on 14 carries and Travis Hanback had 10 yards on seven carries. Each scored a touchdown.
Hanback completed 6-of-14 passes for 53 yards.
"We put the ball down a lot and we dropped quite a few passes," Horrell said.
Hickman ends Bluff's winning streak
POPLAR BLUFF -- Despite playing without its top two running backs, Columbia Hickman was able to stop its two-game losing streak with a 27-20 win over the Poplar Bluff Mules.
Poplar Bluff quarterback Stan Revelle continued his stellar season, completing 15 of 28 passes for 266 yards. He threw two interceptions.
The Mules, generally regarded as the top team in Southeast Missouri, dropped to 5-1 on the season.
Poplar Bluff managed just 37 yards on 17 carries on the ground, while Hickman, which led 7-0 at halftime, churned out 289 rushing yards.
New Madrid loses Top 10 tussle
WASHINGTON -- St. Francis Borgia, the No. 3 team in Class 3A, held Ricky Smith, one of the top two running backs in Southeast Missouri, to just 66 yards on 19 carries as the No. 10 Eagles fell 29-6.
Smith, however, did score the team's only touchdown, a 1-yard run to push his season total to a region-high 21 touchdowns.
Borgia led 20-6 at halftime.
Charleston comes up just short
Charleston's defense came from nowhere to hold Dexter (4-2) to six points, but its offense disappeared as the Blue Jays were shutout.
Going into the game, Charleston had allowed at least 36 points in four of its first five games.
Charleston's game was one of three Southeast Missouri games Friday which fewer than 13 points were scored.
Portageville knocked off Hayti 7-6 and Malden edged Kennett 7-6.
