Chaffee makes history, wins own tournament

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- It took 36 years, but the Chaffee girls basketball team made history on Saturday.

The Red Devils won the championship game of their own tournament for the first time in school history, defeating top-seeded Woodland 53-43 in the final of the Lady Red Devils Invitational.

"They were very excited," Chaffee coach Darrin Pruitt said of his squad. "They made history."

Chaffee entered the tournament as the sixth seed but quickly began to make amends. The Red Devils defeated Kelly in the first round, avenging an earlier-season loss to the Hawks, then dispatched of East Prairie in the semifinals.

In Saturday's final the Red Devils led by one point, 20-19, at the half before gradually extending their lead in the second half.

"We had a good game plan, we stuck to it and executed well," Pruitt said. "We came out on top."

The Red Devils had lost to Woodland by 10 points in their first game of the season.

"They've got some really good players," Pruitt said of the Cardinals. "We practiced for what we needed to do."

Freshman shooting guard Julia Sutterfield topped Chaffee (4-2) with 19 points, while Lindsey Harrell and Jordan Pruitt added 10 points apiece.

"We guarded their shooters a little better," Pruitt said about his team's second-half play. "In the first half we had a few more turnovers. We talked at halftime about keeping the turnovers down, make good passes and take good shots."

Josie Long led Woodland with 16 points.

Chaffee enjoyed success shooting from long range, making eight 3-pointers, including four by Sutterfield and three by Jordan Pruitt.

East Prairie 40, Scott City 36

Lauren Magee and Kaitlyn Shands each scored 10 points as the Eagles rallied to win the third-place game.

Trailing 31-28 entering the final period, East Prairie outscored the Rams 12-5 over the final eight minutes of the game. Shands had five points in the quarter, including hitting 3 of 6 free throws.

Natalie Woods led Scott City with 12 points.

Oran 49, Kelly 43

Taylor Nenninger had a game-high 18 points as the Eagles held off the Hawks to win the consolation final.

Nenninger, a junior, had eight points in the third quarter as Oran outscored Kelly 17-7 in the period to break open a close game.

Addie Kielhofner added 10 points for the Eagles.

Kristi Brucker led Kelly with eight points.
