CHAFFEE -- With Chaffee's biggest bats out of town, the Medicap Pharmacy senior legion team needed some extra production from some role players and good performances from its pitchers to get past De Soto Friday night in a doubleheader sweep.
Lance Dohogne was just what the doctor ordered in the hitting department as he had three hits in both games, including four runs batted in in Chaffee's 7-4 win in the first game.
In the second game, Matt Stroup stepped front and center as he struck out an astounding 15 batters as Chaffee (7-1) posted a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.
Dohogne, in the first game hit a two-run single down the right-field line in a four-run fourth and he plated two with a double to the same spot in a three-run fifth.
"It's nice to see kids who didn't get a lot of opportunities in high school ball to play well," said Chaffee manager Jeff Graviett, who coached Dohogne on Notre Dame's baseball team. "He's been really looking forward this."
While Dohogne was the hitting star in the first game, Bill Posey shone on the mound. Posey had great movement on his pitches and for the most part it had De Soto guessing. Posey, who faced the minimum through the first three innings, gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits. He walked one and hit a batter while striking out six.
"He gets guys out," said Graviett. "He has good movement and he throws strikes."
Chaffee got the win despite having Josh Eftink and Brad Kolwyck -- among others -- out of town. Eftink and Kolwyck usually bat third and fourth for Chaffee.
"With those guys out, it's really nice to come out with a win or two," Graviett said.
Chaffee, which found itself in a 2-0 hole after De Soto scored two in the fourth, answered in the bottom of the fourth with four runs.
Todd Friend, who had two hits, got things started when he doubled to lead off the inning. Jacob Ressel drew a one-out walk and both Friend and Ressel advanced a base on a wild pitch. Dohogne then hit a little squibber down the right-field line to plate two runs. Later in the inning, Posey helped his own cause with a two-run single.
In the fifth, Dohogne doubled to score Stroup and Ressel and Chris Henley singled home Dohogne.
In the second game, Stroup pitched a complete game and gave up just one earned run on four hits.
"Matt's the man," said Graviett. "Fifteen of 21 outs were strikeouts. That's pretty impressive. They got two solid hits off him in the seventh, but we kicked it around a little bit. Other than that, he just dominated."
Stroup also had a great game at the plate in the second game, providing two hits and two RBIs. Dohogne had three hits and Ressel had two. Chaffee had 11 hits as a team.
Chaffee got out to a 9-0 lead before De Soto got two in the sixth and two in the seventh.
