JONESBORO, Ark. -- The Chaffee Medicap Pharmacy American Legion baseball squad made its mark during the 20-team Pepsi Classic by reaching the semifinal round before being defeated.
Chaffee (7-2) won four of its five games in the four-day event, the only loss being a 14-2 setback in five innings Sunday to host Jonesboro (Ark.).
After winning their opener in pool play Thursday, Chaffee won two more pool games, 16-11 over Blytheville (Ark.) Friday and 15-3 in five innings over Searcy (Ark.) Saturday.
That sent Chaffee into a single-elimination tourney format and the team defeated Maryland Heights from St. Louis 11-0 in five innings Saturday, which led to Sunday's semifinal loss to Jonesboro.
Against Blytheville, Adam Friga was the winning pitcher. Andrew DePeder had three hits and four RBIs, Justin Simpher homered and had two hits while Garrett Cook added two hits.
Simpher struck out nine in the win over Searcy. DePeder, Matt Stroup, G.P. Glueck and Travis Hanback all had two hits.
Glueck fanned 10 in the victory over Maryland Heights. Simpher had three hits while Stroup and Scott Eftink added two apiece.
Against Jonesboro, Stroup suffered the loss.
SEMO Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament
T.C. Thunder came all the way from Bloomington, Minn., to win the Women's Open Division.
In Sunday's championship game at Arena Park, T.C. Thunder defeated the St. Louis Patriots 3-1. Those two teams had advanced by winning their respective pools.
Earlier Sunday, Pool 1 scores were: St. Louis Patriots 2, West Frankfort (Ill.) 0; Heartland Travelers 8, Jackson (Tenn.) 0; West Frankfort (Ill.) 6, Manchester Cougars 0; St. Louis Patriots 1, Jackson (Tenn.) 0.
Pool 2 scores were: St. Louis Rebels 4, Southern Illinois Storm 0; T.C. Thunder 8, Missouri Dry Wall 0; Heartland Heat 2, Southern Illinois Storm 1; T.C. Thunder 6, St. Louis Rebels 1.
Also Sunday, the Heartland Pride won the six-team 18-under girls division by beating the Cape Rockets 8-4.
Cape Sr. Babe Ruth Yankees win pair
The Cape Sr. Babe Ruth Yankees improved to 7-1 by sweeping a doubleheader from Dexter 16, winning 8-4 and 10-0 in five innings.
In the first game, Ricky Renfroe was the winning pitcher with two innings of relief. James Powell had two of the Yankees' seven hits.
Brennan Gibson hurled a two-hitter in the nightcap. Gibson and Adam Ralls each went 3-for-3 to pace Cape's 11-hit attack. Powell and Justin McGregor both had two hits.
Cape Riverdogs take two from Fulton
The Cape Riverdogs notched their first wins of the season as they swept a doubleheader from Fulton.
The Riverdogs (2-4) won the opener 9-8 in 10 innings and the nightcap 8-2.
In the opener, Steve Fowler was the winner with three innings of scoreless relief. John Carenza had four of the Riverdogs' seven hits. Mark Silverthorn had two hits and three RBIs.
Chris Reeves pitched three innings of shutout ball for the second-game win. The Riverdogs had just two hits.
Scott City Sr. Babe Ruth squad splits
SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- The Scott City Sr. Babe Ruth (6-4) split with Dexter, winning 9-8 and losing 5-2.
Tyler Ward pitched a seven-hitter in the opener. Doug Kuenert and Daniel Braun each had two hits.
Braun suffered the second-game loss. Jared Scheniman had two hits.
