Chaffee’s dreams of a baseball state championship came to an end on Monday after an 11-5 loss to Salisbury in the semifinal round of the MSHSAA Class 2 State Tournament in Ozark, Mo.
The Red Devils took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but quickly lost the advantage in the bottom half after a three-run Salisbury rally. The Red Devils were done in on five errors.
Ace pitcher Levi McKinnie was tagged for nine runs, six earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The junior also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored for the Red Devils.
Kade Atkins came in to get the final out of the sixth inning on a strikeout, but not before giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk. The junior also hit an RBI single for the Red Devils.
Chaffee freshman Kolbey Estes and junior Carson Spies collected two hits for the Red Devils.
Chaffee will conclude its season in the third place game against Maysville at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30.
