It was a trying season for the Chaffee boys basketball team a year ago.
The Red Devils wrapped up a grueling 2014-15 campaign without a victory but ended that streak earlier this month with a 23-point win over host Marquand.
They added a dramatic victory to their résumé on Monday at the Show Me Center.
Damion Applewhite banked in a pair of free throws with 5.1 seconds remaining, and 14th-seeded Chaffee pulled off the first upset of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament with a 45-44 win over No. 11 Meadow Heights in a consolation quarterfinal.
"It feels good," Chaffee coach Josh Govreau said. "Last year we just ran into some bad luck with a couple of our best players getting hurt. Our kids played hard all year. We were just outmatched.
"This year we're still young, but we have some kids that have been here before. And they battle and battle and battle. ... Today I thought they played magnificent. They played hard all game. Meadow Heights is a great team and a good rebounding team. In the second half, I thought we did a good job of competing every time they put a shot up. I can't be any more excited than I am about our defense."
Govreau joked after the game that Applewhite called bank on both free throws.
"For the young kids, this is a great experience," Govreau said. "I think a lot of them were nervous that first game, and today they didn't play like it. They played hard, and this is a great learning experience to be able to get a win out of a close game."
Jacob Douglas had a chance to score the game-winning basket for the Panthers on the final possession, but he was unable to get off a clean shot. The Red Devils collectively let out a celebratory cheer as the final buzzer sounded.
Freshman Landon Tenkhoff had 16 points to lead the way for Chaffee (2-7), which trailed by as many as eight in the second quarter. The Red Devils closed the quarter on a 14-6 run and led 25-24 at halftime.
There were five lead changes in the third quarter. Trent Liley knocked down an 18-foot jumper from the right side to put Meadow Heights (5-3) ahead at 34-33 heading into the final period.
Panthers sophomore Lane Baremore scored a game-high 18 points, including a baseline jumper that gave his side a 42-41 advantage with 3:25 remaining in the game. Douglas added 13 points for Meadow Heights, which led by as many as three in the second half.
Sophomore Alec Bogenpohl finished with 13 points for Chaffee. Govreau was pleased with the performance from Bogenpohl, who played his first varsity season a year ago as a freshman.
"He really wasn't ready for it, but with the injuries we had, he got moved up. And he just gets so much better the stronger he gets," Govreau said. "He's confident, and he knows he's one of our leaders out there. So it's good to see him hit some big shots for us."
The Red Devils will face No. 10 Kelly in a consolation semifinal at 10:30 a.m. today. Govreau complimented the Hawks' ability to score and said his team is looking forward to the challenge of advancing to the consolation championship.
"We just talk about, 'Let's get to Day 3, and whoever we'll play, we'll worry about that,'" Govreau said. "Kelly's a team I think we can compete with. They change up defenses a lot from what I've noticed, so we've got to make sure we're ready for that. If we come out and play hard defensively and rebound like we did today, I think we'll stand a chance to win that game, too."

The 12th-seeded Cubs had four players reach double figures in a win over No. 13 Oak Ridge in a consolation quarterfinal.
Bell City coach CJ Hadley said he'd been battling sickness for the past few days and was late in arriving to the game, which began at 9 a.m. The Cubs were also late in arriving after being slowed down by traffic and inclement weather.
"I told them, 'Some stuff you've just got to fight through.'" Hadley said. "I didn't want to get out of bed. I was weak. I felt tired, but I still went in there and practiced with them last night. Due to weather and stuff like that, with them just getting ready, I was proud of them. I felt like they came out with a lot of energy and played defense."
Kolten Siebert and Cole Nichols each had 14 points to pace Bell City (5-4) while Logan Yates added 12 points and Peyton Maddox contributed 11 points. The Cubs pulled away in the third quarter, during which they outscored the Blue Jays 23-5.
"I felt like we were more patient on offense. We worked the ball a lot more instead of just taking shots we had," Hadley said. "We had a lot of shots that were open, but we kept working and got even better shots."
Nathan Bolin finished with 11 points to lead Oak Ridge (2-7), which was the first team eliminated in the tournament.
Bell City will take on No. 9 Oran in a consolation semifinal at noon today. The two teams met on Dec. 1 in the opening round of the Oran Invitational Tournament when the Eagles claimed a 68-39 decision.
"It's going to be a good game," Hadley said. "I feel like if we come out with our defense that we have and work the ball on offense again, we shouldn't have any problems. Oran's a good team. Don't get me wrong, but I'm always worried about Bell City, never anybody else, always Bell City."
