Third-seeded Chaffee avenged an early season loss as it ended No. 6 seed St. Vincent's season with a 3-1 victory in the first round of the Class 2 District 2 baseball tournament Monday.

The Red Devils advanced to today's semifinal against host Charleston at 4:30 p.m.

Russell Gardner (7-0) remained unbeaten on the mound this season and helped himself at the plate with two hits, including a triple. Teammate Trenton Horman also had a triple and two hits.

Gardner struck out five, walked four and allowed eight hits while going the distance.

Chaffee, which also had eight hits, scored a run in the second and two in the third.

Drew Armbruster and Dylan Moll each had doubles for St. Vincent. Adam Buchheit led the Indians with three hits and Armbruster had two.

Matt Hotop took the loss.

The Red Devils had suffered a 5-0 loss to St. Vincent in its own tournament.

"It was nice to get another shot at them and get a win," Chaffee coach Brian Horrell said. "It was a well-played game by both teams."

Top-seeded Scott City was a big winner, getting past Woodland 11-1 in six innings.

Shae Simmons went 3-for-4, including stroking a triple and two doubles.

Josh Henson earned the win on the mound and went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Rams (17-1).

Woodland finished its season at 6-13.

Scott City advanced to play Kelly in the semifinals at 2 p.m. today in Charleston.

Notre Dame sophomore Colton Young smashed a grand slam in the first inning, and Austin Greer hit a two-run homer in the second inning to help No. 1 Notre Dame rout No. 8 New Madrid County Central 18-1.

The Bulldogs (15-6) advanced to today's 4 p.m. semifinal game against No. 5 Perryville.

Senior Mark Himmelberg earned the win, tossing two innings and striking out five. He did not allow a hit.

Jake Pewitt threw the next two innings, giving up one earned run on two hits, while Aaron Tomaszewski threw a scoreless fifth inning.

Dylan Drury is scheduled to pitch today against the Pirates at Notre Dame.

Top-seeded Oran pounded out 18 hits as the Eagles cruised by Richland 31-0.

Jayden Pobst went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Eagles.

Steven Dooley added three doubles and three RBIs, Caleb Seyer added four runs and three RBIs and Tyler Beardslee went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs for Oran.

The Eagles will face Leopold at 2 p.m. today in Leopold in a semifinal.

On the other side of the bracket, Delta jumped ahead with a run in the second inning, but it was all Bernie after that.

Nine errors helped the Mules' cause in their 14-4 victory.

Cody Naramore went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Tyler Martin took the loss on the mound.

Bryant Steffens went seven strong innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight to earn the win.

The Crusaders (15-5) tallied all four of their runs in the fourth innings. Spencer Sander and Ryan Sprandel added RBI singles before Max Wieser blasted a two-run home run to provide some insurance.
