SOUTHHAVEN, Miss. -- The Cape Girardeau Central High School baseball team won its first two games in the DeSoto Times Today Classic, but Tigers' coach Steve Williams knows the real tests will come today.
That's when Central faces two of the premier teams in the Memphis (Tenn.) area. The Tigers will play 15-1 Bolton (Tenn.) at 3 p.m. and 18-3 Southhaven (Miss.) at 7 p.m. Southhaven, the tournament host, is the defending Mississippi state champion.
Late Wednesday night, the Tigers beat the Olive Branch (Miss.) B' team 10-5. Then Thursday, Central defeated the Olive Branch A' squad 6-4.
In Wednesday's game, Mark Wittenborn pitched the first five innings for the win. He allowed three runs (two earned) and three hits.
Jay Pierce hurled all seven innings Thursday, allowing seven hits and no earned runs.
The Tigers had six hits, two by Snider.
Scott City 4, Portageville 3
SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion.
Ben Sample belted a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the contest and lift the Rams to 1-6.
"I didn't care how we got it. We just needed a win," said Scott City coach Mike Umfleet. "But it was a dramatic way to end the game."
Sample went 4-for-4 with two doubles in addition to the homer. He drove in three runs.
Steve Posey was the winning pitcher as he pitched 3 1/3 innings of brilliant relief, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out five and walking none.
Jared Schenimann, the starter, gave up four hits and all three runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Chaffee 6, Dexter 1
DEXTER, Mo. -- The red-hot Chaffee Red Devils rode the pitching of Matt Stroup to their eighth straight victory.
Chaffee (8-1) has not tasted defeat since a season-opening loss at Cape Central.
Stroup, one of the area's premier hurlers, allowed four hits and no earned runs while going the full seven innings. He struck out seven and walked five.
Shawn Powderly had two of Chaffee's eight hits. Andrew Horrell homered for the Red Devils, a leadoff pinch-hit shot in the seventh inning that made it 3-0 and started a four-run Chaffee uprising that broke the contest open.
GOLF
Jackson 152, Cape Central 159
Led by medalist Kyle Perry's 1-over-par 36 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club, Jackson knocked off Central to raise its dual-match record to 6-2 and drop the Tigers to 5-3.
Other scores for the Indians were Peyton Sims 38, Matt Litzelfelner 39 and Brett McDowell 39.
Paul York led the way for Central with a 37. He was followed by Nick Harter 40, Luke Oliver 41 and Todd Obergoenner 41.
GIRLS SOCCER
Cape Central 2, Marion 0
MARION, Ill. -- Central scored both its goals in the second half as the Tigers raised their record to 7-2-3.
Jessica Ham and Merritt Gerlach recorded the goals, with Julie Underwood and Heather Hey notching assists. Hey, normally the Lady Tigers' goalkeeper, can't play that position for about two weeks because of a hand injury so she is contributing in the field.
Freshman keeper Megan Kistner got the shutout.
Perryville 4, St. Vincent 0
PERRYVILLE -- Perryville used a huge second half to knock off city rival St. Vincent.
The squads were tied 0-0 at the intermission, but the Lady Pirates exploded for four goals to improve to 8-1-2 and drop the Squaws to 5-4-1.
Stacy Baer scored two goals for Perryville while Brooke Winkler and Cindy Rhyne each tallied once. Baer, Winkler, Riney and Jamie Amberger all had assists. Keeper Amanda Nuyt recorded the shutout.
BOYS TENNIS
Cape Central 6, Poplar Bluff 3
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Cape Central went up against a tough Poplar Bluff team and came away with a victory to improve to 8-0 in dual matches this season.
Cape Central won the junior varsity match 8-0.

ST. LOUIS -- Perennial state powerhouse Lafayette handed the Lady Tigers a lopsided dual-meet loss.
Central (4-6) had no winners. Diver Sara Sprigg recorded the Lady Tigers' lone second-place finish as she compiled her second-best career score of 222.4.

Emily Curtis and Elizabeth Nussbaum both scored two goals for Jackson. Missy Lane recorded the shutout.
