ST. LOUIS -- Cape Girardeau Central's Nick Harter and Jackson's Peyton Sims both qualified for the state high school golf tournament in a surprising Class 4A, District 1 Tournament at the par-72 Quail Creek Golf Course Wednesday.
With the top two teams and the top 10 individuals advancing, Sims finished in fifth place with a 77 and Harter tied for seventh win an 80.
Farmington, seemingly out of nowhere, captured the district title by shooting a team score of 316. Farmington's Eric Griggs was the medalist with a 73.
Northwest House Springs took second with a 329, followed by Cape Central (332), Poplar Bluff (333) and Jackson (337).
"It was surprising that we would be able to beat both Jackson and Poplar Bluff," Cape Central coach Dick Wadlington said. "But none of us could beat Farmington. Farmington took fourth or fifth in their own best-ball tournament on Monday."
Cape Central's team scores included an 83 by Paul York, an 84 by Todd Obergoenner and an 85 by Ty Seabaugh.
Matt Litzelfelner shot an 85 for Jackson, followed by Kyle Perry (87) and Rhett Butler (88).
BASEBALL
Notre Dame 15
Poplar Bluff 5
Phil Davidson, making a rare start on Senior Day, came through with a first-inning grand slam to help spark the Bulldogs' five-inning romp.
Davidson's blast was part of a seven-run opening frame as Notre Dame improved to 14-6. Davidson finished with two hits.
"Phil stepped in and had a great day," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett. "Overall, we're swinging the bats real well."
Lance Dohogne had four of the Bulldogs' 15 hits while winning pitcher Scott Wittenborn added two hits including a three-run homer and drove in four runs. Matt Pobst also had two hits.
Wittenborn worked all five innings, allowing eight hits. He struck out six and walked four.
Oran 4, Kelly 1
BENTON, Mo. -- Oran scored four unearned runs off Kelly standout pitcher Justin Simpher for one of its most impressive wins of the season.
Oran sophomore hurler Trey Graviett improved to 6-0 with a complete game. He allowed three hits and five walks while striking out seven. Kelly's only run was unearned.
Simpher struck out 14 in his loss. He allowed three hits and one walk.
Matt Bucher went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for Oran. Graviett provided a double and two RBIs.
Oran, which is 14-4, beat Forsyth the top-ranked Class 2A team in a tournament game last weekend. The Eagles are ranked fourth in Class 1A.
Kelly fell to 8-11.
St. Vincent 6, St. Pius 5
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past St. Pius in a Jefferson County Conference game.
Derek Kutz got the complete-game win. He allowed five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks. He struck out four.
Ryan Brown led St. Vincent (9-9) offensively with two doubles and two runs batted in. Adam Bockman and Tyler Wengert both doubled, while Brandon Carroll hit a triple.
St. Pius led 4-0 before St. Vincent rallied.
GIRLS SOCCER
Cape Central 5, St. Vincent 1
Amber Voerg scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Lady Tigers (11-4-6) jumped out to an early lead on the way to a decisive win at the SEMO Intramural Field.
"We wanted to get it going early," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "The last time we met ended in a 2-2 tie."
With just over three minutes gone, Cape Central's Merritt Gerlach scored unassisted on a cross which deflected off a St. Vincent player.
Less than 30 seconds later, the Lady Tigers netted another goal when Cameron Bennett scored just outside the penalty box off an assist from Voerg.
At the 18-minute mark of the first half, Central went up 3-0 on a Trisha Klipfel score with Voerg assisting.
Leading 3-0 going into the second half, the Lady Tigers built their lead to 5-0 on two Voerg scores, with Klipfel and Jessica Ham assisting on the goals.
St. Vincent (12-8-1) got its only goal late in the final half, Becky Kirn scoring with an assist from Amanda Carron.
SOFTBALL
Leopold 15, Bell City 5
LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Leopold improved to 10-3 with a six-inning win.
Jessica Stoverink picked up the win. She pitched three innings and allowed five runs. Jodi VanGennip pitched three perfect innings of relief.
Courtney Wesbecher led Leopold offensively with two hits including a home run. Tasha Thele and Melissa Stroder had two hits apiece.
Oak Ridge 28
Scott Central 0
MORELY, Mo. -- Oak Ridge picked up its first win of the season after 10 losses with a three-inning laugher.
Mindy Ruck went 4-for-4 with two home runs, while Candice Schaper went 4-for-4 with four doubles. Lexi Myers and Cassie Ludwig had three hits each.
Laura Glueck was the winning pitcher. She allowed one hit and no walks while striking out five.
