The Central baseball team defeated Northwest 11-1 in six innings, then dropped a 3-2 decision in eight innings against Fox on Saturday in the consolation bracket of 12th annual Midwest Classic in St. Louis.

Central sophomore Josh Meyer earned the win against Northwest, pitching his first varsity game.

He tossed six innings, allowing one run, seven hits and one walk. He stayed ahead of hitters and mixed his pitches well while the Tigers' offense banged out 19 hits.

The second game went eight innings with Fox scoring in the top half of the eighth to pull ahead.

Central sophomore Jamie Pickel started on the mound for the Tigers (2-3), tossing four innings.

He surrendered two runs on four hits and two walks.

Freshman Andrew Williams tossed three scoreless innings, scattering two hits while striking out one.

Brooks Osburn was selected to the all-tournament team.

TRACK Gateway Invitational

Central's girls placed seventh out of 19 teams with 53 points, while the boys were 16th among 24 squads with 17 points during Saturday's meet at Washington University in St. Louis.

Central's girls were led by a second-place finish from Tiffany Mead in the 400-meter dash. The Tigers also were second in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Central's boys were paced by Chase Johnson, who was second in the 800.

Ladue won the girls title with 101 points, and Oak Park captured the boys crown with 111 points.
