Central soccer wins Howell tournament

The Central soccer team brought home its first Francis Howell Tournament title by outlasting Francis Howell Central 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout Saturday in the championship game.

The Tigers (6-1) completed a 3-0 run through the tournament and did not allow a goal. Central advanced the the championship game by defeating Oak Park of Kansas City 1-0 in the semifinals earlier Saturday. Trenton Beckham scored the goal at the 16-minute mark with an assist from Cody Gaither.

The championship game was 0-0 after regulation and two overtimes. Jordan Zaruba, Sam Bornstein, Tyson Whiteside and Gaither scored for the Tigers in the shootout.

Jordan Young made a save in goal for the Tigers in the shootout.

"It was a great tournament for us," Central coach Tom Doyle said.

Central is back in action on Tuesday at Sikeston.

SOFTBALL Incarnate Word Tournament

With four wins from Beth Schnurbusch and a huge offensive day Saturday from Kristain Burger, Notre Dame won its first Incarnate Word Tournament title.

The Bulldogs (13-1) defeated Incarnate Word 12-4 in the championship game. That win followed an 11-0 five-inning win against Notre Dame de Sion in the semifinals and a 6-1 win over Visitation in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame beat John F. Kennedy 11-0 on Friday.

Burger finished 11-for-11 on Saturday, with three home runs. Burger hit two home runs in the same inning in the semifinals and finished with six RBIs in that game.

"She put on an absolute clinic today," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said.

Cortney Ostendorf and Heather Menz each had two hits apiece in the championship.

Bailey Reutzel added two hits in the quarterfinal game.

Seckman Tournament

The Jackson softball team played what coach Julie Rushing called its best game of the 2005 season in a 3-0 victory Saturday against Lindbergh in the opening round of the ninth annual Seckman Jaquar Invitational. But that would prove to be the only win in the long day of softball for the Lady Indians, who lost their final three games.

"We really played well against Lindbergh, which had beaten us 4-0 earlier in the season in the Cor Jesu Tournament," Rushing said.

Darla Mangels allowed just three hits in going the distance.

Jackson scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning, with the key blow was a two-run single by Kelci Keith.

Jackson then lost 8-3 to Eureka after allowing five runs in the sixth inning, 9-1 to Washington and 4-2 to Kirkwood.

Jessica Pitts had a solo home run in the loss to Kirkwood and finished with at least one hit in every game.

Mangels pitched three of the four games.

CROSS COUNTRY Perryville Invitational

Central placed second in the boys division and third on the girls side in the Perryville Invitational.

Ste. Genevieve won both divisions, slipping by Central on the boys side by eight points. Herculaneum finished well ahead of Central for second on the girls side. Perryville finished third on the boys side and Perryville's girls finished fourth. Saxony Lutheran was fifth in the boys race.

John Kipper led the Tigers with a second-place finish with Perryville's Jesse Kueker right behind in third. Brandon Etzold led Saxony Lutheran with a ninth-place finish.

Brittany Moreland was the top area finisher on the girls side, pacing the Tigers in fourth.

Kelly finished second in the boys race.

Jessica Banda finished fourth to lead Notre Dame's girls to a second-place finish behind Poplar Bluff.

Jackson also defeated Oakville and Lindbergh -- both by scores of 4-3 -- to go 2-0.
