The conditions were ugly but the result pretty for the Central girls soccer team Tuesday night at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

Dealing with gusty winds the whole game and periods of misty rain over the last 20 minutes of the second half and into overtime, the Tigers broke thorough with 2 minutes, 47 seconds to play in overtime as sophomore Abby Shupert scored for a 1-0 win.

Shupert found a clearing in the box, slipped the ball underneath Poplar Bluff goalkeeper Courtney Raulston and rolled it in.

"Our sweeper won the ball, carried it up and played it to our outside mid and she did a great job playing it into Shupert," Central coach Dan Martin said.

The Tigers (5-10-1) played into the wind the second half and overtime.

Poplar Bluff (4-11) was playing for the second consecutive day -- the middle leg of a three-day stretch -- and coach Rusty Crafton said he could see his team wearing down and that he felt it was a factor in the deciding goal.

"I think we just kind of wore down," Crafton said. "In games like this, you just have to keep focus mentally and keep fighting through it."

Central goalie Brooke Anderson recorded the shutout.
