Cape Girardeau Central's girls soccer team fought the wind -- and visiting Notre Dame -- for one half before scoring three goals in the second half to beat the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 Tuesday.

Central recorded its ninth shutout of the season and stayed perfect on the year at 11-0. Notre Dame fell to 6-7-1.

Central coach Tom Doyle said the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie, was a hard-fought one -- and Central's Abby Harris experienced it first hand. Harris' nose was broken in a collision in the first half.

The Lady Tigers' Nichole Thiele took over in the second half. Thiele scored the game's first goal at the 50-minute mark on an assist by Emily Atchley. Thiele scored again about 12 minutes later, this time on a pass by Melissa Altenthal.

Central's Corie Nunnally scored the Lady Tigers' last goal at the 69-minute mark.

Central will travel to Jackson on Tuesday. Notre Dame will host Pacific Thursday.

BASEBALL

Jackson 5, Poplar Bluff 4

JACKSON -- Poplar Bluff was one hit away from a come-from-behind win, but the Indians' Christopher Leimer coaxed a groundout with the bases loaded and Jackson escaped with the win.

Although he struck out 14 batters and allowed only four hits in his complete game victory, Leimer was wild much of the game as he walked eight and hit two batters. Jackson's defense compounded the problems by committing three errors.

Jackson led 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh. After the Mules loaded the bases, Leimer walked in a batter to bring Poplar Bluff within a run. Leimer then got the ground out to hold on for the win.

Offensively for Jackson (9-5), Mike Gross went 2-for-3 and Travis Stevens went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and had a two-run homer in the first inning and an RBI double in the third.

Jackson will play Perryville in the Kelly Tournament Saturday.
