For the second straight day, Central's baseball team put away a SEMO Conference foe in five innings, routing host Kelly 16-4 Wednesday.
Central (10-6, 6-1) trailed 3-2 after the second inning before erupting for 10 runs in the fourth. The Tigers pounded out 16 hits, with Patrick Slattery leading the way with a 4-for-4 performance. Slattery had a home run and four runs batted in.
"We're swinging the bats the last few games," Central coach Steve Williams said. "That's good to see."
Chris Daniel went 2 1/3 innings in relief for the win. Daniel struck out five and allowed one hit.
Aaron Dohogne added three hits for Central, and Josh Ford, Mark Dunaway and Chris Conrad had two hits apiece.
The win is the fourth in a row for Central.
Central's junior varsity team won 14-0 in five innings. Jeff Beard picked up the win, and Corey Huskey went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Jackson 4, Dexter 3
Austin McDowell pitched seven solid innings, but Jackson's offense couldn't overcome a seventh-inning rally at home.
Jackson (5-8) took a 2-0 lead after the first inning but went down in order the next four innings. Dexter tied the game in the fourth, and after Jackson scored a run in the sixth, Dexter answered with two runs in the seventh.
McDowell struck out five, allowed nine hits and walked two. Trevor Thompson went 2-for-3 for the Indians.
Jackson's junior varsity team won 14-4 in five innings.
Leopold 8, Oak Ridge 6
A.J. Seiler struck out 13 in six innings to lead the Wildcats to a home win.
Leopold (5-6) allowed six runs on only two hits. Josh Van de Ven went 2-for-3 with a home run, and Kevin Holzum had three hits for the Wildcats.
SOFTBALL
Leopold 19, Oak Ridge 18
After leading 13-4 after five innings, Leopold needed a run in the bottom of the seventh to escape with a win at home.
Oak Ridge scored 12 runs in the top of the sixth to take a 16-13 lead. Leopold (10-0) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but then allowed two more Oak Ridge runs in the top of the seventh before scoring the game-winner in the bottom half of the inning.
Laurie Vandermierden led the Wildcats with a 3-for-3 performance, including two home runs, a double and five RBIs. Anna Nenninger had two hits for the Wildcats, including a home run and five RBIs. Holly Jansen and Wendy Vandeven each had two hits for Leopold, and Courtney Wesbecher added a home run, triple and four RBIs. Mary Beth Bohnsack picked up her sixth win.
Advance 10, Oran 6
Dana Williams pitched her second victory for Advance. Williams also was 3-for-4.
Angela Broshuis and Amber Wilson also went 3-4 for Advance (8-3).
The Hornets used a seven-run fourth inning to go ahead for good.
GOLF
Jackson 154, Ste. Genevieve 156
Jackson (7-1) continued its strong season by winning on the road.
The Indians won behind Matt Litzelfelner and Blake McDowell, who each shot 38. Chad Reiminger and Chase Walker were a shot back.
Central finishes second
Host Dexter shot 143 to win a triangular meet. Central (9-2) was second with 158.
Central's low score was Todd Obergoenner's 38. Blake Driskell (39), Ty Gramling (40) and Cory Marchbanks (41) followed.
BOYS TENNIS
Carbondale (Ill.) 8, Central 1
Central (3-6) won just one match during a road loss. The victory went to Kevin Rohatgi in singles.
