ST. LOUIS -- Chris Carpenter agreed Monday to a one-year contract with the Cardinals.
Carpenter, 28, last pitched for Toronto in 2001, when he went 4-5 with a 5.28 ERA. He missed the 2002 season after surgery for elbow tendinitis. He made eight rehab starts last season before an operation to remove scar tissue from his shoulder.
The Cardinals declined a $2 million option on Carpenter in October.
