Cardinals' season ends in OT

The Woodland boys basketball team made a valiant comeback in the final minute of play to force overtime in their first-round game Saturday in the Class 3 District 2 tournament, but the Cardinals ultimately suffered an 80-77 overtime loss to Clearwater.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals rallied from a seven-point deficit with 40 seconds left in regulation, connecting on four 3-pointers in the final minute. The teams went into overtime tied 67-67.

Fourth-seeded Clearwater, which received a game-high 38 points from Jake Hime, never trailed in overtime.

Senior guard Seth Gaines scored 25 points to lead four Cardinals in double figures. Caleb Lee added 16 points, Chad Gaines had 15 and Kyle Reynolds netted 10.

Woodland hit on just five of 14 free throws in the game and was outscored 20-5 from the line. Eight of Clearwater's 13 points in overtime came from the free-throw line.

Top-seeded Doniphan, No. 2 Malden and No. 3 Twin Rivers all won first-round games Saturday.

The Woodland girls also saw their season end in Saturday's district action. The final score was not available.

Top-seeded Kelly marched into the semifinals with a 65-29 first-round rout of eighth-seed East Prairie on Saturday.

The Hawks (21-6) built a 35-17 halftime lead on their way to a semifinal showdown with fourth-seed Caruthsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Sarah Ruff scored 13 points to pace 11 Kelly players in the scoring column.
