ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals bolstered their bullpen Friday night, getting Mike DeJean from the Milwaukee Brewers for two minor league pitchers to be named.

Less than an hour later, St. Louis acquired pitcher Sterling Hitchcock from the New York Yankees for minor league pitchers Justin Pope and Ben Julianel.

DeJean, 32, was 4-7 with a 4.87 ERA and a team-leading 18 saves in 58 games for the Brewers. He was 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in 14 appearances since the All-Star break.

Last year, DeJean had a career-high 27 saves. For his career, he is 23-23 with a 4.27 ERA and 51 saves in 425 games with Milwaukee and the Colorado Rockies.

Hitchcock, 32, was 1-3 with a 5.44 ERA in 27 games. He's in the final year of a two-year, $12 million contract, but has made only one start.

Pope, 23, was the 28th overall pick of the 2001 draft. In 20 games for Class A Palm Beach, the right-hander was 4-11 with a 4.92 ERA. Last year he was 8-1 with a 1.38 ERA in 12 games.

The left-handed Julianel, 23, was 4-2 with nine saves in 51 relief appearances at Class A Peoria.
