CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Cape Girardeau Central High boys basketball team trailed early and never recovered, suffering a 78-52 loss to host Carbondale Tuesday night.
The Terriers built a 16-9 lead in the first quarter and went ahead 37-25 by halftime.
"I thought our effort was good and we played hard," said Cape Central coach Brett Reutzel, whose team fell to 4-7. "We had a little trouble at the beginning and the end, though."
Ross Conner was the top scorer for Cape Central, tossing in 17 points. Eric Wessel added15 points.
"We had some good looks on shots from our people that didn't go down for us," said Reutzel. "They outrebounded us in the second half, giving them too many second shots. I thought overall the kids played really hard, though."
Hillsboro 55, Jackson 54
HILLSBORO -- Hillsboro hit one of two free throws with 13 seconds left, then saw Jackson miss a close-in shot at the buzzer as the Hawks dropped the Indians to 5-6.
Tory Meyr led the Indians with 20 points while Levi Bollinger added 12. Meyr's steal and layup with 25 seconds left had tied the contest at 54-54 before Hillsboro's late foul shot.
Sikeston 62, Kelly 40
SIKESTON -- Sikeston's Bryan Ellit was unstoppable as the Bulldogs took an early lead and never trailed to down visiting Kelly.
Ellit scored 30 points and was the only player for either team to finish in double figures.
"We just couldn't stop Ellit," said Kelly coach Kent Mangels. "He's a great post player. He can do it all."
The Hawks (7-4), who trailed 30-18 at halftime, cut the Sikeston lead to seven points in the third quarter, but could get no closer. Sikeston extended its lead to 45-33 by the start of the fourth quarter.
"We made a nice go of it, but they're a good team and they made it very difficult for us to get over the hump," said Mangels.
Dexter 73, Charleston 60
CHARLESTON -- Dexter lived up to its No. 6 ranking in Class 3A by using a big second half to knock off host Charleston.
The Bearcats (10-0) outscored the Blue Jays (8-5) 42-30 in the second half to win going away.
Shawn Guethle scored 20 points to pace Dexter, which got 16 from Shane Mattingly, 14 from Brett Hale and 12 from Shannon Wright.
Charleston was paced by Howard Biles with 18 points. Jordy Mixon and Terrance Gillespie both had 12.
Leopold 73, Delta 64
LEOPOLD -- The Wildcats, with four scorers in double figures, downed visiting Delta.
Leopold used balanced scoring to overcome a 26-point performance from Delta's Josh Altenthal.
Danny Nenninger and Ashton James both scored 19 points for Leopold (9-4) while Jason Van de Ven tallied 15 and Adam Horrell netted 12.
Allen Rhodes added 14 points for Delta.
Leopold built a 28-18 halftime lead and took a 48-36 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Bell City 78, Zalma 57
BELL CITY -- Bell City was ahead by only two points at halftime, but the host Cubs broke the game open in the second half to earn their second victory of the year.
Nathan Walter led the way for Bell City (2-7) by scoring a season-high 27 points. Gabe Scherer added 12 points and Brian Phillips scored 10.
"We came out in the second and played a lot harder," said Bell City coach Jeff Funston. "I think my pep talk at halftime got them fired up."
The top scorer for Zalma was Chris Canoy, who notched 17 points. Ronnie Moyt and Dustin Wiseman added 10 points each for the Bulldogs.
Marquand 79, Meadow Heights 73
PATTON -- Doug Rehkop poured in 30 points to lead Marquand to a road victory.
Scott Emmett added 19 points and Heath Stephens tallied 10.
Josh Mayfield paced Meadow Heights (1-9) with 18 points. Cody Thompson added 16, Derik Collier netted 14 and Gerald Jones had 11.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Delta Tournament
DELTA -- Top-seeded Twin Rivers and No. 2 Dexter advanced to the championship game of the Delta New Year's Tournament with semifinal victories.
Twin Rivers knocked off No. 5 St. Vincent 55-44 while Dexter downed No. 3 Oran 46-38.
The title game will be at 8 tonight, with the third-place contest at 6:30.
No. 4 Chaffee and No. 7 Delta will meet at 5 for the consolation title. In consolation semifinal action, Chaffee routed No. 8 Puxico 59-18 and Delta beat No. 6 Woodland 40-30.
Twin Rivers held off a strong challenge from St. Vincent, which fell to 6-2. The Squaws, who got 17 points from Jessica Lakenan and 11 from Danielle Sutterer, trailed just 25-20 at halftime. Casey Class led Twin Rivers with 17 points.
Sara Heisserer scored 17 points for Oran and Maria Eftink added 11, but it was not enough to stop Dexter, which got 21 points from Mikaela Scott.
In consolation play, Chaffee, now 4-5, got 19 points from Jodi Pfefferkorn and 12 from Jennifer Vandeven, while Delta received 19 points from Rebecca Cook and 17 from Rebecca Below.

Farmington 75, Cape Central 6
FARMINGTON -- The Tiger wrestlers were only able to secure one victory out of 14 individual match ups, falling to 1-4 in dual meets this season with the loss.
"They're the favorite to win the state title in Class 4A this year," said Cape Central coach Josh Crowell. "They took it to us, and we really got thumped."
