WICHITA, Kan. -- The McDowell Capahas scored 11 runs in the first inning as they steamrolled their way to a 14-1, five-inning victory over Denver, Colo., Monday in the National Baseball Congress World Series.
The run-rule victory kept the Capahas (33-8) in the winner's bracket at 2-0.
"It's the first time we've been 2-0 out here in this tournament in a long time," said Capahas manager Jess Bolen. "The guys are really playing good baseball out here."
The Capahas had opened the tournament with a 9-8 victory over the Wichita Twins on Saturday.
Against Denver's Mark Stander, McDowell saw its first seven batters reach base in the bottom of the first inning, which was eventually capped by a Darin Kinsolving grand slam.
Ross Bennett, Kevin Meyer and Steve Kress opened the inning with singles to load the bases. Kinsolving and Shane Allen then followed with RBI walks for a 2-0 lead. Zach Borowiak chased home two more runs with a double and Chris Sledge reloaded the bases with a walk.
Stander, who went the distance, obtained his first out on Craig Ringe's sacrifice fly that upped the lead to 5-0. Nathan Taylor was then retired on a fielder's choice for the second out. Bennett, Meyer and Kress then followed with walks, the latter two forcing in runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Kinsolving completed the damage with his grand slam for an 11-0 lead.
The home run was the third of the tournament for Kinsolving, who also has nine RBIs.
Denver scored its only run in the second off winning pitcher Lanson Debrock, who pitched all five innings. Debrock, who picked up a save in the opener, struck out six and walked three.
"He never was really in any kind of jam," said Bolen.
The Capahas retaliated with a run on an RBI double by Taylor in the second and added two more in the fourth.
Stander was charged with 12 earned runs, walked seven and struck out two.
McDowell finished with 10 hits overall with Meyer going 3-for-3.
Dylan Park had two of Denver's four hits.
Bolen said the team will return to Cape Girardeau before playing its next game on Friday night. The Capahas will play the winner of tonight's game between the Elkhart Dusters and the San Diego Stars.
