The Cape Girardeau Yankees -- one of the city's two Senior Babe Ruth baseball teams -- rebounded from Friday's doubleheader loss at Dexter by sweeping Scott City Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
Cape prevailed 5-1 in the opener and 18-0 in a nightcap shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. The Yankees are now 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the SEMO North Senior Babe Ruth League.
Tim Davis pitched his second one-hitter of the season in the opener. He struck out four and walked five in going the seven-inning distance.
Ricky Renfroe had two of the Yankees' five hits and he also drove in two runs.
In the blowout second game, James Powell allowed one hit in four innings for the victory. He fanned six and walked two. Adam Ralls hurled the final frame, giving up two hits.
This time the Yankees pounded out 16 hits, led by Matt Wilson with three. Powell doubled twice and had four RBIs while Arthur Pilsner, Garrett Williams, Gabe Keys and Jess McGregor all added two hits.
Chaffee Legion splits pair with Sikeston
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Chaffee and Sikeston split a Senior American Legion District 14 doubleheader, Chaffee winning the opener 3-2 and Sikeston claiming the nightcap 8-0.
Chaffee is 14-7 overall and 6-4 in district play. Sikeston is 12-6 and 9-5.
Justin Simpher pitched six innings for the victory in the opener. He allowed five hits and both runs, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Matt Stroup hurled a perfect seventh for the save.
Simpher had two of Chaffee's six hits off losing hurler Bobby Landers, who went the distance.
Gabe Scherer hurled his second straight shutout in the nightcap. After firing a one-hitter at Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Wednesday, Scherer four-hit Chaffee.
Scott Eftink suffered the loss. In four innings, he allowed two runs and two hits. Garrett Cook gave up six runs and five hits in two innings.
Cape White Sox sweep Chaffee
The White Sox -- Cape's other Senior Babe Ruth squad swept a Saturday doubleheader from Chaffee, winning 4-1 and 5-4 to stretch their winning streak to five and improve their record to 6-5.
Jeff Brosey fanned eight in the opener. Lucas Presson had two hits.
Wayne Essner notched the victory in the nightcap that ended on a game-winning single by Jon Lorenz in the bottom of the seventh inning.
