POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Jason Chavez outpitched Jamie McAlister in Cape Ford & Sons' 6-1 Senior American Legion victory over Poplar Bluff in the opener of a make-up doubleheader Friday night.
Cape (21-15) won the second game 15-10.
Chavez went seven innings and allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks while striking out 10.
McAlister, who was selected in this year's baseball draft but opted not to sign a contract, went 5 2/3 innings. He issued six runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks. He fanned nine.
Justin Welker picked up the win in the second game. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on seven walks and seven hits. He struck out 10.
Tom Kinnard suffered the loss. He allowed nine runs, seven earned, on six hits, four walks and two strikeouts.
Luke Johnson paced the Ford & Sons offense, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a two-run triple. Richard Harrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Timmy Wencewicz doubled and singled in going 2-for-3.
Chaffee 5, Dunklin Co. 3
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee's Medicap Pharmacy Senior Legion team knocked off Dunklin County 5-3 in the opener of a doubleheader and won the second game 17-3.
Justin Simpher claimed the win in the first game, going seven innings. He allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six.
John O'Rourke, and Andrew DePeder both had two hits. DePeder hit a two-run homer in the first inning.
Matt Stroup won the second game. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks. He struck out nine.
Lance Dohogne had three hits for Chaffee, while Perry Rice, Adam Friga and Travis Hanback had two each.
Jeremy Glastetter hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
Cape junior legion
CHARLESTON, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Best Mortgage Junior American Legion team won its first game in the district tournament Friday, knocking off Charleston 11-1.
Seth Hudson gave up one unearned run on four hits to claim the win. He fanned four and walked two.
Jason Gibson pitched two innings of no-hit relief.
Hudson, Chris Conrad, Mitch Craft, Aaron Dohogne and Lee Essner had two hits each as Cape improved to 37-9.
