SENATH, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons Senior American Legion baseball team continued to set a torrid pace Sunday as it routed host Dunklin County 16-3 in a District 14 game stopped after seven innings by the 10-run rule.

Ford & Sons improved to 13-8 by winning for the 10th time in 11 games. Cape also took over first place in the district standings with a 4-1 record.

Dunklin County, the defending district champion which has won five of the past six District 14 tournaments, fell to 3-1 in the league.

"We just continue to play really well," Cape manager Tom Reinagel said. "Everything is clicking."

What clicked the most Sunday was an offense that banged out 22 hits as every starter hit safely.

"The bats were alive," Reinagel said. "We hit up and down the lineup. The guys were really ringing the ball."

Seth Hudson went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs while Tyler Schlosser was 4-for-5 with five RBIs.

Patrick Slattery belted his team-leading fourth home run of the season and added a double, good for two RBIs. Also getting two hits were Matt Wulfers, Blake Urhahn, Aaron Dohogne, Wayne Essner and Luke McClellan.

Jake Welch was the winning pitcher. In six innings, he allowed nine hits and one earned run. Essner hurled a scoreless seventh, allowing two hits.

Cape jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Ford & Sons got five in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Dunklin County got single runs in the first, second and fourth innings.

"This is a big win for us, since Dunklin County has pretty much been the top team in the district for quite a while now," Reinagel said. "When we're clicking like we are now, we're a good baseball team. Hopefully we can keep it going."
