SIKESTON -- Cape Ford & Sons Senior Legion played two tight games with Sikeston to open its district schedule Thursday with a doubleheader split.
Sikeston won the first game in extra innings 2-1. Cape (7-3, 1-1) came back in the second game for a 6-5 victory.
Lanson DeBrock (1-1) took the loss in the first game, pitching all eight innings. DeBrock allowed six hits, two walks and struck out 12. But in the bottom of the eighth, DeBrock unleashed a wild pitch that scored the winning run from third with two out.
Tatum Kitchen had two of Cape's four hits, including a home run.
In the late game, Jeff Lappe used his arm and bat to get Ford & Sons a win. Lappe (2-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings and ripped one of two Cape solo home runs at the plate.
After Sikeston scored two runs in the seventh to close to within one run, Todd Pennington came in with two outs and runners on second and third. Pennington got a pop out to first baseman Jeff Beasley to end the game and earn the save.
Beasley had the other Cape homer and Ross Bennett went 2-for-4.
Chaffee Sr. Legion
VAN BUREN -- Chaffee's Senior American Legion swept a doubleheader Thursday against district foe Van Buren in two very different ways.
Chaffee (9-4, 6-2) needed a run in the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 win in the first game. Then opened up the offense for a 10-0 five-inning win in the nightcap.
In the opening game, both teams scored twice in the fourth before Chaffee got on top in the seventh. Tim Lowery scored Tommy Burnett with a single to make Denver Stuckey the winning pitcher. Stuckey (2-0) pitched six innings and Lowery pitched the final inning for the save.
In the second game, Matt Schonhoff (2-1) pitched all five innings for the shutout.
