SIKESTON -- Cape Legion Ford & Sons baseball team opened its season Saturday, splitting a pair in the double-elimination Chaffee Tournament.

After defeating Perryville 9-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Jeff Lappe, Cape Legion fell 5-4 to Sikeston.

Lappe struck out seven and walked two in going the distance. He also helped his own cause with a two-run home run.

Shane Gipson and Ross Bennett each added two hits.

Nathan McGuire belted two-run home runs in the first and fifth innings against Sikeston, but Ford & Sons saw a 4-3 lead slip away in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sikeston scored two runs in the frame and went on to win.

Craig Ringwald suffered the loss, allowing eight hits. He struck out seven and walked four.

Cape Legion returns to tournament action today at 9 a.m. at Harmon Field in Chaffee.
