The Cape Girardeau Ford and Sons American Legion team inched closer to .500 with a 14-3 eight-inning rout of Metropolis on the road Friday night. Mike Taylor went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs to lead Cape's (7-8) 17-hit attack. Ty Craft, Scott Brueckner, Sean Bard, Kent Deason and Lance Young had two hits apiece. Mike Taylor went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs to lead Cape's (7-8) 17-hit attack. Ty Craft, Scott Brueckner, Sean Bard, Kent Deason and Lance Young had two hits apiece. Craft and Bard each hit home runs, with Bard adding three RBIs. Deason scored four times.

Trevor Irwin picked up the win with five innings of three-hit ball. Irwin struck out three, walked one and allowed one earned run. Cory Huskey and Athony Wulfers finished out the game on the mound for Cape.

Other events

The Cape Girardeau American Legion junior team opened play at the Paducah Tournament with a win over Lavergne, Tenn., 11-3 on Friday.

Garrett Stevens pitched all seven innings for the win. Stevens, Chris Brotherton and Brett Heischimdt each had two hits. Kory Kitchen added a three-run home run for Cape (9-3).

Late Thursday

The Cape Girardeau Senior Babe Ruth baseball team swept a doubleheader from Chaffee at Capaha Field.

Tyler Bruce pitched a complete game in a 6-2 win in the opener. Bruce added two hits.

Cape won the second game in five innings 16-6. Scott Dunaway pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win. Trey Glaus led Cape with three hits. Bruce and Andy Billmeyer had two hits apiece.
